vivalachrisonmtv3 Before this short review begins, I would like to say that I am a person who can enjoy a TV movie and even a cheap B-movie if it has an actor in it I enjoy. I rented 'Earth Vs. The Spider' because Dan Aykroyd was in it, and I was eager to see him in a role that would remind me of 'Ghostbusters'. Basically, this movie is an exact cross between 'Spider-Man' and 'The Fly', although its script is not as nearly as good as that of 'Spider-Man'. Comic book geek Quentin, played by Devon Gummersall, dreams of becoming a superhero. He wants to get the girl. He wants to be tough in front of her and wants to show up the guys who sit outside of his apartment building every day and pick on him. After he is stuck by a spider-testing needle at the scientific research building he works at, he begins to notice a drastic change in his strength, agility, and hunger. At first, he is able to his his power for good but soon begins to be consumed by it and ultimately looses control as Det. Grillo (Dan Aykroyd) grows closer and closer to learning the truth about Quentin. The Good: -Dan Aykroyd and John Cho are the most believable out of the cast, but I think the acting was mostly pretty good considering the script they had to work with. The weakest was the lead, Devon Gummersall. -The Make-Up and special effects are pretty decent for a 2001 B movie. The Bad: -The cops in the film act like uneducated high school bullies. No joke, these are the stupidest and rudest cops in existence. A dumb cop once or twice isn't bad, but this film portrays all cops as ignorant slobs and it gets quite aggravating. -Devon Gummersall's acting is pretty questionable, especially the first part of the movie and his 'spider voice'. -If you're looking for a scare or even just a big monster to look at, he's only really transformed for a few minutes at the end and there is absolutely no scares. -The cinematography has terrible angles.Overall 3/10.
Michael_Elliott Earth vs. The Spider (2001) 1/2 (out of 4) Remake of the 1958 cult classic doesn't have too much in common with the original film outside of the title. A wimpy, comic book reading guy gets injected with some sort of chemical, which soon has him turning into a mean spider. Dan Aykroyd plays the Detective trying to solve all the murders. This is a really horrible film even when judged on its own because there isn't an inch of talent to be seen anywhere in the film. The story is downright stupid and it's clear this is just some masturbation fantasy from a comic book lover who has never had a girlfriend. The performances are all very weak and that includes Aykroyd who falls flat on his face during all of his scenes. The special effects are just as bad as is everything else here. Several of those Arkoff films from the 50's were remade in the 90s and 00s but I hope none of the rest are as bad as this turkey.
pksky1 We've seen a lot of good movies from Dan Akroyd. One might hope that if he made a bad one, you would be able to spot it. It is usually easy to spot bad movies, but only because the plots are easy to spot. But unfortunately in this movie, they are advertising things that don't even exist in the movie. There is no giant spider and the planet is in no way involved with the thing we do get.I happen to recall that there was a giant spider movie somewhere recently that was also pretty bad, but had some nice special effects. This movie also cites special effects as something to look for, but we don't get any until the last 15 minutes or so and they are nothing special. The latest King Kong was no great story, but the special effects were truly benchmark stuff, absolutely awesome. The movie makers are generally pretty careful about listing the ingredients on their films, but not this time.
pikabot Me and my friend rented this movie in hopes that it would provide an hour's entertainment. And from the premise, this movie could have been good. Emphasis on could have been.Basic premise: Comic-book geek, working as a night-shift security guard at some sort of biotech lab sees his partner gunned down in front of him and impulsively injects himself with super-spider juice. he comes down with a fever, and when he recovers, he's got superpowers! yay, right? Wrong. his transformation into a spider continues progressing, and his behavior becomes more and more bestial. he considers himself a threat to everyone around him, and eventually winds up killing people. I don't know how it ended because I turned it off about 3/4 of the way into it.Frankly, it's amazing we lasted that long. We survived mostly by making fun of it relentlessly, but is really not much fun with this film as it lacks the outright ridiculousness of similarly poor movies such as Boa Vs. Python. The camera-work is poor, the acting is terrible, and the plot such a clichéd mess that even the old Captain America cartoons have trouble competing in terms of sheer lameness.if MST3K were still around, I'm sure they could make this comedic genius. Me, I just don't have the patience to sit through it.
