GazerRise Fantastic!
Kaelan Mccaffrey Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
Kayden This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
Leofwine_draca REEKER is a typical monster-horror flick with one crucial difference: it has a twist that throws the entire story on its head. There's only one problem: the twist isn't original. In fact, it seems heavily derivative of IDENTITY, and that's the reason I didn't enjoy it much. It's not bad, sure, but it raises more questions than it answers and I think the film would have been just as effective without it.Anyway, aside from that, this is horror by numbers. Kudos to the filmmakers for opening their movie with a HIGHLY effective scare sequence: a family drive off road and the dog and husband disappear. The wife goes out to find the dog maimed – and then she turns around and her husband is standing there with half his head missing. Some truly disgusting CGI effects animate this shock scene and it's undoubtedly the best in the movie. From then on we're in predictable territory and it seems to take an age for the scenario to be set up properly. The youths are stranded, separated, and finally stalked and killed by an unseen killer. The killer's identity is pretty odd and I did enjoy the idea of its smell, and when finally revealed it is a frightening beastie. But other bits, like the drill coming out from under the bed, made me laugh instead of shriek. There isn't a great deal of gore on offer but the script is a cut above the usual fare. There are also a couple of good characters among the assortment: Tina Illman is perfect as the feisty South African heroine and Devon Gummersall acts well as the blind guy. Derek Richardson pretty much recreates his character from HOSTEL but Arielle Kebbel and Scott Whyte are pretty poor playing clichéd stoners. I personally appreciated the fact that genre veteran Michael Ironside turns up for a cameo appearance because I always get a kick out of seeing him on screen, even though he doesn't get to do much here other than act scared and shady.REEKER could have been better but I was a bit disappointed that it's so slowly paced. I appreciate that a lot of that time is spent on the build-up of atmosphere but really, more incident and less scene-setting would have been better. The movie lasts for an hour and a half but it easily feels like two hours because so little happens in the first half. In future when I see a good scare in the opening scene of a film, I'll be cautious and aware that this might mean there isn't much else happening for a little while.
daggersineyes I can tell from reading several reviews after watching the movie that many people just don't really pay attention in horror movies and here they have missed the point of this movie on several levels. Also, some negative reviewers complain that it uses conventions etc that have already been done before. Well honey, you tell me what horror flick doesn't do that? LOL Yes there are some elements that are old but it's about how well it's done and in this case it's put together beautifully. Good acting, well written, fleshed-out real characters, touches of humour, imaginative "kills", nicely built suspense & a cool, spooky moody atmosphere as well as a very unique and creepy bad guy - there is so much to love in this little gem. Ignore the bad reviews, this one's worth getting hold of. :DIf you like indy "travelers in peril" movies, you might like Splinter which is better than this one - with a very unique premise and some wonderfully drawn characters.
baserock_love It looks like earth and modern civilization but this movie apparently takes place in a parallel universe where things like mutilated women with their jaws ripped off chained to tables and truckers with no legs crawling out of dumpsters are such common occurrences that if you're traveling with a group of people, they're not really worth mentioning to your companions if you should happen to spot one. This is one small example of how laughably stupid the characters in this movie are.Another byproduct of this mysterious universe is that even when confronted by what would normally instill sheer terror in someone, you can only look slightly concerned, this is just one small example of how laughably bad the acting in this turd was.The death scenes were so poorly edited that i had to watch one or two of them a couple times to see what the hell was going on.Oh and there's the "twist", as if it wasn't obvious enough what was going on by the design of the antagonist the MOMENT THEY SHOWED IT they think so little of their audience they make the insane decision to recap and explain in excruciating detail the obvious explanation for this twist.Really sad too since I was very intrigued after the opening of this movie but the first 5 minutes are by far the high point and it's just a sheer drop after that. The myriad of things that make this an awful horror movie all should have been worked out with the script and screen play. There is another extremely low budget horror movie called Dead End with a very similar concept, the main difference between these two is that Dead End was fantastic and handled very well and in a way that it can keep many guessing, and this movie is about on par with the worst made for TV tripe the scify channel can vomit free of charge onto your screen. Do yourself a favor and go watch Dead End. If you've already seen it, then I can tell you this is very similar, you probably know what I mean. The positives? Well, it did end (I can't believe i watched the whole thing :|), and for how obviously low budget it was, the special effects were for the most part well done. I give the special effects a 2 out of 10 and the rest of the movie a zero.
lcioskar i rented this movie last night along with some other horror movies, i love the horror genre, and i have seen it all, good movies, regular movies, and pretty bad ones. i must say that i didn't expect much from this one, but once it was over i can tell you i was very surprised, i really enjoy this movie, it keeps your attention at all times, there are good scary and jumping moments, and the end was very very good, the twist that the director gave the film was very remarkable, it reminded me a little bit to the final destination films. i believe this film deserves more than it has gotten so far. i will check the 2nd part and see if its as good as this one.
