Protraph Lack of good storyline.
StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Tobias Burrows It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Freeman This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
TxMike I found this on Netflix streaming movies. I actually wanted to see what Brooke Shields is doing in movies lately, she plays the wife and mother in a super rich family that vacations in the Austrian Alps. The story is about Felicity Jones (mid-20s) playing 19-yr-old Kim, an English girl who works at a fast food place. She had been an avid and good skateboarder as a teen but after a car wreck which injured her and killed her mum she has not been the same.Looking for better work she is declined at an interview (not 'posh' enough) but as she prepares to leave is snapped up, seems someone just canceled and they needed someone, anyone. So the main of the story is in Austrian ski country with this English girl certainly a fish out of water with no idea what to do on the snow. But a chance encounter with a boy on a snowboard gets her attention, and ultimately she is training for the big money prize to be offered in an upcoming snowboard competition. This movie is made or broken on Jones' acting and she carries it well. Her character of Kim is interesting and fun, she not only gets into the snowboarding competition but she also gets into the competition for the hand of the rich son of the Chalet family.A nicely entertaining movie.
SnoopyStyle Kim Matthews (Felicity Jones) used to be a hot skateboarding champ. After the death of her mother, she mysteriously disappeared from skateboarding and takes a fast food job to support her father (Bill Bailey). She tries to get a catering job in an exclusive resort in the Austria for four months but her low rent ways don't fit the bill. Then a spot opens up and she's all there is. The posh world is baffling to her. Georgie (Tamsin Egerton) can't believe who the agency sent her as the new Chalet Girl. The family arrives with Jonny (Ed Westwick), his father Richard (Bill Nighy), his mother Caroline (Brooke Shields), his girlfriend Chloe and her brother Nigel (Nicholas Braun). It's a very conventional movie with questionable setups. I know she doesn't want to skateboard but there has to be a better setup for it all. And they must be smoking something if they think holding back the reveal will elevate the emotions. Felicity Jones is suppose to be a tomboy but she has never given off that vibe in any of her movies. All she really does is wear less makeup and more regular clothes. She has to tomboy it up more. It's also too unbelievable that the agency sent her for the job. The father is silly. Couldn't they give him a disability that requires her to take care of him? I like a lot of the actors in this including Felicity Jones. They are bearable in this all too predictable movie. It is just relentlessly pushing the two leads together inevitably to their sappy relationship. This is a relationship that exists in movie montages. Other than taking no risks, there is nothing wrong with this. The rom is very predictable and the com is fairly bland.
Jackson Booth-Millard I might have heard about this British made film during it's cinema release, but I certainly came across it much better once it appeared on DVD, it looked appealing because of the good names in the cast, and it was rated alright by critics, so I watched it. Basically nineteen year old pretty tomboy Kim (Felicity Jones) is a former skateboarding champion, and stuck in a dead end job trying to support her father Bill (Bill Bailey), following the death of her mother in a car accident, but she soon finds a job in catering in the most exclusive chalets in the Alps. Now a chalet girl Kim has to get used to being surrounded by posh, rich people, serving them champagne, but she is also of course surrounded by skiing, she tries to do this herself without any real skill, but then she discovers snowboarding, and having had skateboarding experience, gains good skills, only distracted by flashes of bad past memories while doing so. She sees an opportunity to make the much needed money she and her father need, a big snowboarding end of season competition with a $25,000 prize, but she has to overcome her fears and eliminate these flashes, but also she is distracted by having a crush on her handsome and spoken for boss Jonny (Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick). There are moments when Bill wonders if he is losing her daughter as she is almost too busy to talk to him that much, as she is training and getting close to Jonny a lot of the time, but in the end Kim does her father proud making a great impact at the competition, and of course winning the prize. Also starring St. Trinian's star Tamsin Egerton as Georgie, Ken Duken as Mikki, Bill Nighy as Richard, John Tucker Must Die's Sophia Bush as Chloe, Brooke Shields as Caroline, Nicholas Braun as Nigel, Georgia King as Jules, Miquita Oliver as T4 Presenter, Rick Edwards as T4 Presenter, Tom Goodman-Hill as Les, Angela Curran as Interviewer 1, Jessica Hynes as Interviewer 2 and The Inbetweeners' Alex Macqueen as Macolm. Jones is sweet and ambitious as the young heroine, Egerton and her get good scenes together with their funny friendship, Westwick is the typical good looking guy easy to like, and there is laughable support from Nighy and Shields as the rich guests at the chalet, I agree this won't tug at the heartstrings that much and is a tiny predictable in places, but the sporty material is cool, the love story is nice, and there are moments that will make you laugh enough, a likable romantic story. Worth watching!
annevejb Around November 2012 I was re-watching the Worst Witch series and sequels yet again and updating two of my review – comments and, surprise, surprise, the Blockbuster special low price second hand Blu-ray I purchased, Chalet Girl, it turns out that it is Felicity Jones, WW season 1 and Weirdsister, Ethel Hallow, in the lead. In a nice girl role, too, no grit in the screen persona.Somehow, Chalet turned out to be the sort of story that I could watch dreamily, all the way through, first viewing. Even the part when Felicity is 95% naked, she wears small hand puppets. Update, gloves and a hat.I found the second viewing, an hour later on the same day, to be dreamy as well.Mostly it was not possible to see that it was the same actress as for that early Ethel, occasionally very. As with Ashley Tisdale, she can grunge down or pretty up. Also, she is now ten years older, mid twenties rather than mid teens.Austrian winter sports scenery as an added extra. Tamsin Egerton, etc, as added extras to embellish the chocolate cake. The Blu-ray commentary is Felicity Jones and the director. Somehow I could not rate this as anything other than 10 out of 10. I keep the rating at that in order to remind me just how a big an impact this story had when I first saw it at that particular time. This is too magnificent to be British made.
