Darin One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
emman-01467 In the seediest part of New York City, a strange young man named Duane Bradley check into a hotel in times square with everything especially a basket that contains his small deformed brother. Long ago Duana was born with his twin brother attached to him creating a fuss among his family and when he was older him and the creature got surgically separated leaving the Siamese brother in a garbage can, he did rescued him and protects him every know and then. Now they seek revenge on the people that separated them as the creature goes out of control for it eats ravenously and craves for blood even the ones from room intruders. An unforgettable horror comedy independent flick that became an instant midnight cult favorite with critical acclaim even from Rex Reed, this darkly comical terror tale is gory as hell and funny too. The violence and gore gave this movie an X rating originally but was released uncut and unrated into theaters, the acting maybe wooden but the story line is quite original and features some good make-up and stop motion effects.
Smoreni Zmaj Good, interesting idea, destroyed by low budget. Siamese twins, one of which looks like overgrown tumor on the side of the other, are separated against their will. Years later they are on the killing spree to get revenge. With today's technology and medium budget this could be decent horror movie. 35 years ago and without money authors should have taken different approach. If they could not afford production on satisfying level, instead of completely ridiculous horror scenes, they should have based their movie on psychological effect and with some skillful directing let our imagination strike terror in our bones. But they decided to destroy potentially great horror by showing us extremely unconvincing bloodshed and lame monster that is everything but scary. Sure, there are movies that go so deep into stupid that they penetrate all through to the other side and we get hilarious result. But this one is not stupid enough to border with genius. It just stupid. and that's a shame, because this story has big potential and even quite a psychological depth.4/10
Paul Magne Haakonsen Oddly enough I never got around to watch "Basket Case" before now late in 2016, even as being an avid horror fan. Why? Well, I just never had the chance to watch it, and just happened to come across all three movies this year.I had heard about "Basket Case" for sure, and was under the impression that it was sort of an important movie in a way to the horror genre back in 1982. However, watching it today in 2016 I don't really see why this would be all that important. Perhaps I was just misinformed.Taking into consideration that the movie is from 1982, it does still prove to be adequate entertainment. Just bear in mind that the special effects were limited back then.Storywise, then I will say that "Basket Case" was interesting, because it had a certain bizarre element to it which director Frank Henenlotter managed to utilize quite well. The acting in "Basket Case" was adequate, I can't really claim to think that it was impressive on any account. But Kevin Van Hentenryck did manage to leave an impression of sorts, with the odd portrayal of the Duane Bradley character. As for the special effects in the movie, well let's just say that I am sure it was fairly scary and impressive back in 1982. But when you look at it today, you can't help but be amused and laugh at it. The creature, Belial, while its concept design was quite interesting, it looked awfully fake and laughable on the screen. For a horror movie, then "Basket Case" wasn't really all that scary, perhaps because most of the movie was laced with a faint comedy aspect as well. The movie is labeled as a Horror Comedy here on IMDb as well."Basket Case" certainly is entertaining enough for what it turned out to be, and it is certainly also a watchable movie. However, it is not really an outstanding movie, nor is it a movie that supports more than a single viewing. There just wasn't enough contents to the story for it to support multiple viewings.I am rating "Basket Case" five out of ten stars.
Michael_Elliott Basket Case (1982) ** 1/2 (out of 4) Duane Bradley (Kevin Van Hentenryck) arrives in New York City carrying a basket that contains a big secret. Duane is actually half of a Siamese twin and he and his deformed brother (who he keeps in the basket) are seeking vengeance against the doctors who separated them.Frank Henenlotter's BASKET CASE was made for very little money and it quickly became a success and gathered a rather large cult following. I think there are several things to really enjoy in the film but at the same time I can't help but think that there are several things that could have improved it. The biggest issue I have with the film is the fact that it really drags at times and I think losing ten minutes probably would have helped it. I mean, the revenge factor takes way too long to materialize and I'd argue that there are way too many subplots.Outside of that you've got to respect what Henenlotter was able to do with such a small budget. Yes, the special effect of the deformed brother isn't believable but there's still some low-budget charm that really helps the picture. Another major plus is that the atmosphere really captures the seedy side of New York City and there's no question that the authentic locations really add a lot to the picture. As with William Lustig's MANIAC, this film just breathes NYC and its seedy locations. Van Hentenryck's performance is another plus the film has going for it and there's no doubt that there are many memorable supporting players.BASKET CASE certainly deserves its cult reputation. The gore, weird story line and terrific locations make it a must see.
