RipDelight This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
dvirzonis Great miniseries if you are expecting yet another melodramatic soup opera with historical background. Also it may be useful for those who can not manage to read the original novel, just to figure out what it is about. I have studied L. Tolstoy's works for many years (no, I'm not professional, just love this writer), including reading them in original language, and this made me to hate every aspect of this miniseries: the interpretation of the original work, the overall plot, selection of actors, interpretation of characters, landscape scenes, etc. Overl impression: it is to sweet, to incorrect, so roughly understood... Sometimes the movie almost made me cry when beautiful, wise and subtle moments on which Tolstoy spend years creating, writing and re-writing, were spoiled with terribly ridiculous and cheap made scenes. Old prince Nikolay Bolkonsky is primary illustration to my words. For somewhat reason this character was made hysterically comic, when Tolstoy originally put to it all the charm of "old school" Catherine II times general, who is so patriotic and so much loves his children. As a contrast, I liked princess Marya Bolkonskaya, how it was interpreted by absolutely charming Jessie Buckley. One drawback - Jessie is beautiful, and Mary wasn't. Pierre Bezukhov, as played by Paul Dano, was all incorrect, terribly laughable and so much unsuccessful. Yes, Tolstoy draws this character being an eccentric to the high society. But Paul was absolutely unable to show the "beast", the elemental force inside of this native Russian man, hidden by the outer shell of foreign education. I will better be silent about Lily James (why is Natasha blonde?!) and James Norton - they were great as melodramatic couple, but almost nothing from the characters created by L. Tolstoy. It's so sad that so much efforts were just spoiled to make the ordinary, naive and shallow soup opera out of the masterpiece.
William White Nothing bad to say here, it's so well done everything is perfect. So rare to see this kind of quality any more, no hesitation, watch it. I have not read the book, I always heard it was kind of a struggle, I'm more of a magazine reader short attention span so I was concerned that there might be long Winter scenes and drawn out dull details but this is not the case. The episodes are perfectly paced, the details just the right length and the Actors are truly at the top of their game. Big budget production with gorgeous scenes from incredible Palaces, it gave me a tour of Russia as I have never seen it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have, bravo to the BBC!
leonblackwood Review: I quite enjoyed this epic mini series but it did get slightly boring in the middle. The fact that these rich, pompous folk ended up in such poverty, was a decent watch and the transformation of Paul Dano's character, Pierre, was interesting throughout the series. I'm not one for period dramas and I must admit, I did get the DVD's by mistake but I ended up getting into the various characters story lines. The continuous search for love and wealth seemed to take up most of the different characters time, so it's amazing to compare those times to this day and age, we're people are either watching TV or spending most of there time on there mobile phones. After such an dramatic change in circumstances, each family have to change there lives forever, and with the various deaths within there families, they quickly have to adapt to the under privilege ways of living. The emotional scenes from James Norton, Paul Dano and Lily James were great and the kindness from Adrian Edmondson and strange morals from Jim Broadbent, all contributed to this series being enjoyable. I know that a lot of people preferred the book or the earlier adaptations of this story but as I haven't read or seen another version of War & Peace, so I'm glad that I watched it. Enjoyable!Round-Up: This epic drama was directed by the young Tom Harper, 36, who also brought you the Scouting Book For a boys, 2 episodes of This Is England '86, 4 episodes of Misfits, 3 episodes of Peaky Blinders and the Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death. After such a great achievement with this series, this is definitely a great beginning to his career and after reading all of the impressive reviews from various critics, the only way is up for this young director.I recommend this movie to people who are into their drama/history/romantic movie starring Paul Dano, Lily James, James Norton, Adrian Edmondson, Greta Scacchi, Jack Lowden, Jim Broadbent, Brian Cox, Stephen Rea and Callum Turner. 7/10
cassidyorme I didn't expect this to be the best rendition of War and Peace ever done but it is by far. Paul Dano deserves many awards for his performance and i hope he chooses to do more films like this in the future. the attention to detail is amazing.. my only criticism is that it is too short.. now that Top Gear is gone and War and Peace is over, i almost have no reason to ever watch the BBC.. I hope that they tackle something else similar to this next.. a revised Pride and Prejudice or gone with the wind.. these types of mini series should be their mainstay. epic performances all around
