Synopsis

Rich Hall's Fishing Show was a comedy programme written by and starring Rich Hall and Mike Wilmot. It was first broadcast on 11 November 2003 in the United Kingdom on BBC Four. It was repeated in the UK on Dave in 2008. The Fishing with the Corleones sequence involving the late Anita Roddick was omitted from the repeat. The show was set in the lochs of Scotland, on which Hall and Wilmot would go fishing. However, very few fish were caught, and the situation instead formed the setting for dialogue between the pair which would be vaguely themed on subjects like love or the Olympic Games. Some episodes featured sketches involving characters such as Bob, a decapitated limousine driver whose head had survived, and Charles Manson, a reclusive salesman who, despite his appearance, was not the convicted serial killer of the same name. Each episode would end with a celebrity guest who was invited on to the boat to talk and fish with the pair. At the end of each show, a celebrity guest would appear and talk with Hall and Wilmot. The idea was seen earlier in a pilot the pair had called Rich Hall's Badly Funded Think Tank. In that show, the segment was titled "Fishing with the Corleones", but in the Fishing Show these sections are unappended.

Reviews

VeteranLight I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Darin One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
bob the moo Rich Hall and fellow comedian Mike Wilmot seek refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday big city life and spend some time just relaxing and fishing out on the Scottish lakes. As they fish on the banks and on the dock of some picturesque lakes they chat about a range of subjects and generally put the world to rights. If you have never heard of Rich Hall then, a) you're missing out and b) chances are you will enjoy this show. The series relies heavily on his world-weary style of humour - it is not to everyone's taste but I personally love it and I have been to see him twice as himself or his creation Otis Lee Crenshaw. Here there is really not much to the series - basically he just talks through issues ranging from politics to travel with his usual wit. It is not as funny or sharp as his stand up material can be, but it is still pretty funny.Hall is great in the show, if anything he struggles a little with the structure and feels over-edited here, but he is still a naturally funny guy. Wilmot is less funny. He feels quite like he was added to the series just to give someone for Hall to actually talk to rather than just talking to the audience. He is not given a fair share of the material and he really pales beside Hall. Guest spots are reasonably interesting but really, this is Hall's show and it is him that carries it.Overall this is a good show that I enjoy mainly because I really enjoy Hall and his rather acerbic style of humour. Even though Wilmot is weak, Hall is able to carry the show and the material plays like a slightly less sharp version of his stand up show. Worth seeing unless you really have something against Hall.
