EP1 Episode 101 Nov 25, 2004

When taxi business owner Max Vivaldi hires Danny Baveystock - an antique expert from an auction house in London - to come over to his home town of Mumbles, Swansea to value his bakelite telephone, his high maintenance family are less than impressed with the £200 estimated once fees have been deducted. However over dinner, Danny finds a much more interesting case when Max recounts how a will of one his ancestors entitled the Vivaldi's to a stake of land that now constitutes the whole city, and as such makes Max the rightful owner of Swansea. Interested by the possibilities, Danny enlists the aid of his fellow London colleagues to work on verifying Max's claim. Meanwhile Danny takes in the Swansea sites with Max's eldest daughter Maria, who takes him to the pub with her on the way to meet her boyfriend Gethin. But the evening is cut short when Gethin announces he has been having an affair with a woman at work and breaks up with Maria. Upset she goes to confront the woman the next day but

Eager to tell Val the news that the Vivaldi clan now own Swansea, Max is in for his own surprise when he arrives home to find Val's note announcing she has left him for another man. In panic, Max reseals the note pretending not to have read it. The next day Val discovers what has happened when she sees Max all over the news and hurries back home where Max pretends like nothing has happened. But Val eventually learns that Max does know the truth when she realises the envelope was sealed differently and promises Max that her affair is over. The rest of the Vivaldi family also struggles to come to terms with the new turn of events. While Candy revels in the new press attention, Leo is less than thrilled at his father's new found fame due to the fact that it was through his father's identity that Leo built up his secret £50,000 business. Following the craziness of recent events, Max decides to drop his pursuit to have his father declared insane and instead publicly hands over the ownership of Swansea to his father and his new fiancé Big Claire, the latter of whom is soon handing over the inheritance in exchange for a house, a pub and to be named Lord Mayor. This is of little concern to Max who is still struggling to cope with the knowledge of Val's affair, especially as she refuses to name the man she ran away with. But he soon finds out for himself that Sam the Egg Man was her lover and responds by pelting him with his own eggs, an exchange that is secretly observed by Maria who is shocked to learn of her mother's infidelity. Meanwhile, Danny is all set to leave Swansea now that Max has abdicated his ownership of the city but first decides to make one last ditch attempt to stop Rico from marrying Big Claire. Following their inheritance of Swansea, Val searches for a new house for the family while Max dreams up elaborate plans to improve the city. After working alongside Iris, Max agrees to have dinner with her one night where he ends up pouring his heart out about Val's affair – information Iris is soon secretly retelling to a devious Stella who plans to use it to her to her advantage. Sam tries to make amends with Max by introducing him to his new girlfriend, but Val soon learns she was just a ploy for Sam to get her back and so pays him a visit along with Myrtle and Bronwen who threaten to ruin Sam's career if he doesn't stay away from Val. Meanwhile Gethin is delighted when he manages to land his future father-in-law as an account, and soon uncovers the secret business that Leo has been running under Max's name, as well as Leo's bank account of £30,000. After telling Maria he is going away for a course, Gethin's lies and true whereabouts are discovered by Danny, who spots him at the hospital holding a new born child. When a guilt-ridden Maria decides to break off her affair with Danny, he decides to confront his love rival about what he saw. Gethin soon confesses to the fact that he has a child from a one night-stand and that he is also in debt after having gambled away the money he stole from Leo. But Gethin isn't about to let his secret leak out to anyone else, prompting him to knock Danny out and hold him hostage while leading everyone else to believe that he has gone back to London. Meanwhile Stella goads Val into spilling all the particulars about her affair with Sam to her and the girls. When Sam realises Val has been blabbing about their intimate details, he soon tells Max about his wife making the pair of them a laughing stock. A furious Max exiles Stella from Swansea for her part in the set-up, while also announcing his wife'

ShadeGrenade Over the years, there have been numerous attempts to put Wales and its people on the television screen, ranging from the cringe making Ronnie Barker sitcom 'The Magnificent Evans' to the touching period drama 'We Are Seven'.'Mine All Mine' was a piece of whimsy from the pen of Russell T.Davies, starring Griff Rhys Jones as the head of a dysfunctional Mumbles-based family who discovers he is the rightful owner of the land on which Swansea is built. Of course his new-found status as 'King of Swansea' creates untold problems for both himself and his family.As one would expect from a Russell T.Davies series, the writing is first-rate. The cast are wonderful, particularly Jones as the dreamer 'Max Vivaldi' and Rhian Morgan as his long-suffering wife Val. Even the minor characters, such as Debbie Chazen's 'Big Claire', are beautifully put over. For me, though, the real showstopper was Ruth Madoc as Val's trouble-making mother Myrtle. Being Welsh, I could recognise those characters from everyday life. Seeing familiar locations such as Mumbles pier and Swansea Town Hall was also a joy.The only annoying thing about this show was that it ended on a cliffhanger. Despite having many excellent qualities, 'Mine All Mine' failed to find an audience. Perhaps its very Welshness alienated English audiences. I don't know.Russell was bitterly disappointed by the cancellation, he had plans for two more series. Four months later, however, he had a ratings blockbuster in the shape of 'Dr.Who'.To think I.T.V.-1 let this go after one series, yet pumped out five seasons of the execrable 'Footballers' Wives' - it beggars belief!
cloisterbell-1 The John Scott Martin connection is great. As broadcast on BBC America,this series proves that Russell D. Davies was the perfect person to adapt Doctor Who for a modern (mainstream) audience. In many ways it appears to be his love letter to Wales. For the first time since Blue Scar, a WELSH drama. It depends on stereotypes to be sure, but they are lovingly realized, full of nostalgia, beauty, affection, and great sentimentality. I love it, with a big smile on my face throughout. Brilliant. Without spoilers, the story contains superlative acting, realistic drama, lines and stories much more similar to "Bob and Rose" than "Queer as Folk" but similar in approach. One thing that really appeals is the direct comedy. It's refreshing that this seems to be essentially a comedy, without the constraints of "drama". Davies seems to relish in this liberation, especially the manicness this allows.

We started off recording this and watching Blackpool - by week 3 it reversed and we only watched the rest of the incredibly poor Blackpool (Potter knock-off) to get it finished.But Mine all Mine was a joy. It was funny, wonderfully written and beautifully performed (Siwan Morris is a superb discovery). The Shakespearean subplots gave the script a richness other writers can only dream of for their main ideas. The off-the-cuff humour had us in stitches (when Max takes over TV and accuses the helpers of grooming his son, the mad taxi rides, the slightly subverted fish-out-of-water storyline for Danny).Davies and Paul Abbott are clearly our best writers in TV (more so than the arrogant Poliakoff, who seems to be copy/pasting his stuff since the beautiful Shooting the Past).Nasty cliff hanger though. BAD ITV.Pleased to see it is finally getting a DVD release in March. Unlike Blackpool, we've already pre-ordered this one. Now how about Davies's kids progs finally getting a release?
rapout Brilliant comedy. But it leaves me wondering; is that all there is? I really wanted to continue to see Maria (Siwan Morris). Never mind. Not many shows keep me watching. This is (was) one of the best. As usual, Griff Rhys Jones was funny as ever. I loved him in the Smith and Jones series. This is the type of show that is so stupid but so brilliant, that you just have to see the next episode to see what happens. Just when you think you have it figured out, something different happens that makes you laugh. I never took it seriously, but only as pure entertainment. The scenes with everyone running around like chickens with their heads cut off and the hurry, hurry, hurry music reminds me of the Benny Hill series. It seems like every episode had to have one. The biggest down fall of the show is that it finished tonight. It leaves you with questions? Like, Is there going to be another series?Jo Stone-Fewings, that played Danny had me laughing at the end. After I got used to his hair, I liked the character.
