CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Livestonth I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Marva It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
rjs-901-286505 David Renwick is a comedy genius, but Jonathan's successful career and glamorous wife in last year's Easter Special were unconvincing. Perhaps the new episodes that are promised for this year (2014) could be presented as flashbacks to a nerdier past. It will be a shame if there are no more appearances by Sheridan Smith as Joey Ross - the most endearing of his companions so far, who obviously harboured a secret passion for him. Some of the plots have been a bit ropey - notably "The Omega Man" which portrays the US Air Force as ridiculously incompetent. They would have cracked the "mystery" straight away without any help from Jonathan. There must still be plenty of plot lines that could be adapted, for example from Chesterton's Father Brown stories (the current BBC series is woeful) or the locked room mysteries of John Dickson Carr, alias Carter Dickson. However on the evidence so far I think the writers can continue to come up with new, baffling, and entertaining stories.
jonfrum2000 I imagine the people most likely to write out a review are fans, but the adulation for this series here is far over the top. The series - at least the first season of it - is nice entertainment. I am currently working my way through them, and I've enjoyed them enough to keep at it. That being said, the series is not brilliant, or excellent or the best TV mystery ever. The plots and solutions are full of holes, to the point where obvious errors and implausible events can't be ignored. And the 'sexual tension' business between the two main characters? 'Will they or won't they' got old twenty years ago in such series. Apparently it appeals to women, so I'm not the intended audience for that trope, but it weighs down the series every time they pull it out of the hat. The idea of an illusion designer as crime solver is a perfectly good one, but actually writing locked room mysteries that work is an art that these television writers have not mastered. Example: in The House of Monkeys, the solution to the mystery involves the habit of a gorilla who lives in a house with his owner(!) to chew up envelopes. C'mon now! This series is more along the lines of Angela Lansbury's Murder She Wrote. Perfectly entertaining for some, as long as you don't take it seriously. And very far from good mysteries, like the Chrisite series like Miss Marple and Poirot.
A Jay I have to say that I really enjoy this series, but I did prefer Caroline Quentin to Julia Sawalha. Quentin could just deliver a better comedy performance and was less stilted. Not to criticise Sawalha's performance though, she was still a brilliant sidekick for Jonathan. The basic premise of the series is that magicians assistant Jonathan Creek and in the first 3 series writer Maddy Magellan are invited to solve seemingly impossible murders and crimes. Jonathan uses his skills of logic to determine exactly what happened, and it is usually the most complex set of incidents. What makes the series so good is the comedy moments. Quentin and Davies are the perfect coupling. My favourite episode would have to be "Ghost's Forge". It is brilliantly written, and has a twist where Maddy gets her own back on Jonathan and leaves him with a mystery to solve. The shocking twist at the end though where the mystery is solved was a great case of misdirection. Personally I think it could survive another couple of specials and a series, but much more and the stories will start to dry up and it would lose it's edge. It would be great if a series was made for this year then Caroline Quentin could return for a one-off Christmas special and then put an end to the series, it would be able to go out on a high that way.Overall I would say this is a fantastic series, but a warning to the writers, you can have too much of a good thing!!
lucy-19 Great settings (windmills, castles) and premise. Lovely hero. This would be an excellent series if they concentrated on telling a story and presenting us with a puzzle to solve. Those bits are great. Unfortunately its creators feel the need to clutter up the narrative with "humour" and "character traits" and some female called Maddie. I just don't get Caroline Quentin. I don't see where she is funny. She's overweight, and she stands around with her mouth hanging open. And?And? Would someone explain the joke to me? I was disappointed when I sawan episode after Julia Sawalha took over and she was doing exactly the same - being overweight and never shutting her mouth. She can gain weight if shelikes, she looks fine, but Julia - it isn't funny! There was a whole double episode where the "comic relief" was provided by awoman who was not only (slightly) overweight, but was also - wait for it! - over 50!!!! Wa ha ha ha ha ha! And - you know what? She wasn't particularlyattractive!!!! Actually the actress playing Kitty was reasonably nice-looking, but her character was dressed as a woman 20 years older in no make-up andfrumpy woollen hats. And she had a Scottish accent! I just can't start laughing.
