SoTrumpBelieve Must See Movie...
Mjeteconer Just perfect...
Casey Duggan It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Caryl It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
SnoopyStyle Christopher Tracy (Prince) and his brother Tricky are in the south of France scamming the rich. Outrageous shipping heiress Mary Sharon (Kristin Scott Thomas) is set to get $50 million on her 21st birthday. They go to her birthday party to try to scam her. She is taken with the wild boys but the problem is that her father (Steven Berkoff) is not happy. Christopher starts to fall for his target.I don't know if Prince is making a comedy, a spoof, or a whatever. He's acting completely different than almost everybody else. It's oddly unreal. It's almost amateurish. The problem is that he's the director and nobody is able to tell him to do it differently. He needs to figure what he wants and hire a good director to help him achieve it.
Michael_Elliott Under the Cherry Moon (1986)** (out of 4) Christopher (Prince) and Tricky (Jerome Benton) are brothers working Miami Beach where they seduce women for their money. Their latest target is Mary (Kristin Scott Thomas), a woman who just turned twenty one and is about to inherit fifty million dollars. Tricky soon finds himself falling in love but the girl's rich father isn't going to go for their relationship.UNDER THE CHERRY MOON was released to very little noise and it was pretty much forgotten the minute it hit theaters. I doubt many people in 1986 were wanting to see a B&W movie and I doubt even more that they wanted to see anything other than PURPLE RAIN 2. This film has gained a pretty bad reputation over the years but I honestly didn't find it to be that bad. Yes there are all sorts of problems but I thought there was still some good stuff as well. For starters, the cinematography is downright beautiful and I thought it really captured a fairy tale like quality. The B&W images are perfectly used to highlight the beaches and the sexy locations. I also thought there were some rather funny moments scattered throughout the picture. As far as Prince goes, his acting had certainly gotten a little better since PURPLE RAIN. Benton is decent in his supporting role but I thought Kristin Scott Thomas and Steven Berkoff were quite good.I'm going to guess that Prince wanted to do some sort of romantic drama that had the flare of the 1930s. This probably explains it being shot in B&W and they even name drop Bela Lugosi in the picture. The biggest problem with the movie is that the story itself is just way too predictable and I'd argue that there's really not any drama and the ending certainly doesn't hit like I'm sure Prince wanted it to. Still, there are much worse movies out there than this.
David Kohen (heisenberg83) I watched "Under the Cherry Moon" last night for the first ever time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm surprised it has such bad reviews and is considered such a turkey by most critics. I guess at the time most people wanted Prince to come out with another "Purple Rain" type movie. Prince is a great physical comedian in this movie, I was surprised just how much as was laughing throughout it at his and Jerome Benton's antics. Prince clearly is having a whale of a time here - and his over-the-top narcissism throughout is clearly meant as tongue-in-cheek. This is one of those quirky, odd, entertaining, screwball movies that has a real cult feeling to it, and definitely major rewatchability factor. Prince did a very good job directing this at the age of 27 (which I also wasn't expecting) and uses the songs off his "Parade" LP to excellent effect at the right moments and the right scenes. I love the "Girls and Boys" sequence with everyone doing that 80s arm-waving dance that Prince starts off on the piano. Kristin Scott Thomas is absolutely lovely in it - long time to go before her big break in "The English Patient". Steven Berkoff plays a similar villain that he did a few years earlier in "Beverly Hills Cop". Love the scene where Prince is trying to make it up with Scott-Thomas, and he does this by sitting in total silence at the back of his car with his shades on. Will have to try that technique someday. Shame, Jerome and Prince could've ended up being the modern-day screwball farce pair, if they'd made more films together.
ronda-k I really enjoyed this movie. It is on my list of most thought-provoking movies. From my experience, I believe that a lot of people just don't think to watch it, for whatever reason they have. It has Prince in it... or it's in black and white... or it has Prince in it... or it just isn't 'main stream' enough... or it has Prince in it. Whatever the reason it is most often a case of judging it before they saw it. If they ever saw it at all.I am a big fan of Prince. I have been since I was a teenager. I suppose that is why I first watched it. But after seeing it and seeing through it to the point behind the movie, I was hooked. I was a fan. There is emotion and a poignant point behind each scene. If you watch it and see it deeper than the average person simply looking for a way to waste an hour an a half you'll find a movie that actually makes you feel for the characters as if they were your friends... or you may at least wish they were. And that kiss... Well, if you watched the movie... you know the one. It is, in my opinion, one of the best movie kisses I've ever seen.
