Python Hyena The Watch (2012): Dir: Akiva Schaffer / Cast: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, Rosemarie DeWitt: We have two factors here. We have an alien invasion that first strikes at a Costco where a security guard is found splattered throughout the discount sections. Then we have four males who assemble and set out to conquer the problem only to discover that their foe is from outer space. Ben Stiller leads the group as the Costco manager whose background has him involved in numerous support groups. His big hang up is that he cannot get his wife pregnant. Vince Vaughn plays a father whose teenage daughter is involved in a relationship that he forbids. Jonah Hill plays a guy who failed to become a cop. He still lives at home with his mother where he pretends to be independent. Richard Ayoade plays a new neighbour who brings forth comic bewilderment as well as a great plot twist. To be fair, the concept here has appeal but this is no Ghostbusters. The subplots allow the characters to have background, however they are also pointless to the central plot. We know that the climax will be over the top violence with a security guard getting his heart ripped out. The special effects are familiar but work within the alien conventions. The actors are completely type cast but they will appeal to hardcore fans. Smaller roles are another story though. Rosemarie DeWitt plays Stiller's wife and a host of others make brief cameos. Ghostbusters has a more specific agenda with its reality fantasy worldview but fans of the comedians are the one who will desire to watch this spectacle. Score: 5 ½ / 10
Nicholas Denvir The film was great , there were moments where there was some level of comedy. The comedy ain't high brow but still manages to make you laugh. Some moments in the film however were quite hard to watch and made me want to really skip the scene. There are a few scenes with Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn where both of the actors over acted notable scenes are when the cops find them drinking bear in the van and when they find the "dead alien" and brought it back to Bobs house. Overall the movie is a movie you watch when you just want a cheap laugh and to relax as the story isn't that intricate so there is a very unlikely for someone to get lost in the story.
NJHammer_1980 I loved this movie from beginning to end! If you like the cast and their type of comedy I am sure you will love it too!Don't get me wrong it's no masterpiece so I couldn't unbiasedly rate it above a 7. I have spent the last 5 weeks watching a combination of Netflix, Sky movies, DVDs and other online based viewing as I have recently sustained a back injury. So you can imagine by now just watching TV can be a bit tiring even when watching a classic (maybe it's because when re-watching a classic you know the ending!). So I was very surprised to see a trailer for this movie to start within the next hour when aimlessly flicking through the channels of UK terrestrial TV. I set an alarm as a reminder and when alerted I sat back and was hooked right from the start! Pleas be aware I hadn't heard of this title before, so at the end I thought i would take a look at it on IMDb.com and was surprised to see other reviewers rate this below a 5, let alone a 1! If you're not a fan of the actors in this film then don't watch it! Those of you that rated it below a 5 obviously don't like the cast or their type of humour but still watched it just so you could bash the likes of Ben Stiller and all. I felt so strongly about this that I just setup my login and this is my first review. Now I have more time on my hands and a login I may go through more titles where reviewers blatantly have an underlying agenda where all they want to do is give bad reviews to actors they don't like, maybe that or they are not from this planet and related to the foe in this movie!
Prismark10 The Watch is a science fiction comedy. Ben Stiller is an active member of his local Ohio small town community and a senior manager of the Costco store. When the store's security guard is killed and the police show little interest in investigating the death he forms the neighbourhood watch. However, he only manages to recruit Vince Vaughn, a construction worker, Jonah Hill, who dreams of being a police officer and Richard Ayoade who is new in town. The watch use the group as an excuse to drink and have fun much to Stiller's annoyance. While driving on patrol, they discover a strange metallic orb that acts as a destructive weapon and think it might be of alien origin. They uncover an alien plot threatening the world. The film probably aimed to be the new Ghostbusters but is patchy and falls short. Although there is good repartee between the cast there is an uneasy mixture of gross humour and sci-fi. What should had been a clever action comedy aims for the low brow too often and the humour seems too lazy. Its also saddled with a lot of Costco product placement.
