A Disappointing Continuation
Humbersi
The first must-see film of the year.
Casey Duggan
It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Candida
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

Like all movies and stories, it has to start somewhere. There is a potential that some will like it and some will not. I for one really liked it. Although the baseline of the story has similarities from other shows, it had it's own uniqueness. What I disapprove of,is that they left it with the pilot instead of at least showing a few more episodes. If you recall Star Trek (Original Series) also had similar issues - however the movie industry is really fresh out of ideas. The keep remaking the same movies over and over for example Spider Man, Superman, Peter Pan, War of the Worlds, Cape Fear, Bram Stokers Dracula, to name a couple. The Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy has an opportunity to expand beyond Star Trek the Movies - with today's technology it would be Damn Cool! :) I say to the producers - Use Benedict Cumberbatch as Justin Thorpe, Emma Stone as Rula Kor, and John Pyper-Ferguson as Heenoc Xian.Hell this movie can yield on returns at lease $1.2 Billion... There is a lot of potential.

A "to be continued movie...not continued". This best describes my over all feeling of disappointment with this TV pilot. Fans of Rod Taylor (I didn't know he was an Aussie!) will enjoy seeing the 70 something actor going through his paces (in an Aussie accent) in this predictable scifi film. The film reminds me of Gene Rodenberry's "Andromeda" (Long lost ship vehicle). Some good performaces... but as this was only a pilot be forewarned that the film only serves as a vehicle for future stories of which there were none.

Like many potentially great sci-fi flicks THE WARLORD suffers from many problems caused by its starvation budget. Though it was shot for peanuts in 1996 as a t-v pilot on the Paramount back lot -- and looks it-- it nevertheless has a lot to recommend it. It is worth watching if only to see veteran Rod Taylor back in harness and to see yet another brilliant performance by multi-talented teen Elisabeth Harnois. (I can't understand by Hollywood doesn't recognize this youngster's extraordinary talents. She should have been a super star long ago.) The cast does an excellent job with a weak script and Joe Dante's direction is flawless. I found THE WARLORD to be an entertaining two hours, infinitely better than much of the dreck that is passing as excellent cinema in these strange days.

I would like to make clear that it is very hard for a science fiction movie to dissapoint me but this one most certainly does. Although the box doesnt make it clear, this movie was designed to set the scene for a television series. The acting is below average and the plot is completely unorriginal. The opening scenes see a simple man loose his younger sister who happens to be a genius and then vowes to find her. There's nothing here you havent seen before and the ending might as well say "To Be Continued....". I dont recommend this movie to anyone who likes the science fiction genre.
