Matrixiole Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
Jack Hawkins (Hawkensian) The ambience and immersion created by the graceful animation and punchy sound design quickly wears thin as The Red Turtle reveals itself to be a ponderously self-important work. The curious decision to avoid dialogue altogether makes it quite difficult to care about the hollow little figure at the centre of it, and the heavy use of metaphor doesn't help ratchet up the emotional appeal, either. I spent most of the running time wishing I was watching Cast Away or even that similarly laconic sea adventure All is Lost.
RomanceNovelist Beautiful in its simplicity. No singing animals, explosions, dialogue, just a man, an island, and a turtle to start with. The movie is about isolation, humanity's need for companionship, man's relationship with nature as well the volatility and unpredictability of nature even in its stunning beauty.Everything about the island, the colors, and the animals is visual feast along with the characters' physical movements, are both realistic as well as hypnotic.I cried like a baby the last ten minutes of the movie all the way until the credits rolled, having understood loss.Spoiler: I wondered throughout the movie if the turtle was real all along, or if it had it died in the beginning and it was the man's imagination that carried him through years of isolation. The movie doesn't give any answers, and we are left to believe the fantasy, all the more with a quiet feeling of loss in the end.
davidcshannon I don't regret seeing this, but I wouldn't have missed much if I hadn't.Positive Spin: A long, beautiful moving painting. Presents a fable without imposing meaning or purpose, allowing you to find your own.Negative Spin: A lot of beautiful pictures that don't communicate much. The characters say essentially nothing the entire movie. They don't express much non-verbally either, besides the most basic of emotions. Although there are scenes, there's essentially no plot. Inexplicable events occur, and are never explained. The movie ends abruptly with no closure.
matrix_swatcat The Red Turtle was nothing short of a stunning watch with top-notch animation from Studio Ghibli and beautiful direction. The plot is a heartfelt tale of a marooned man and his encounter with a mystical red turtle and their journey together (anything more said would probably ruin it). Despite not a single word being uttered throughout the whole film, the incredible soundtrack and the mesmerising artwork does brilliantly to convey emotion through its use of colour and score. With no dialogue, The Red Turtle is an art film but an engaging one for all to enjoy regardless of age and language.Considering its run-time of just 1 hour and 20 minutes, I would say it's definitely worth a watch
