After her widowed father dies, deaf teenager Dot moves in with her godparents, Olivia and Paul Deer. The Deers' daughter, Nina, is openly hostile to Dot, but that does not prevent her from telling her secrets to her silent stepsister, including the fact that she wants to kill her lecherous father.

Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Tobias Burrows It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
bettycjung 7/12/18. A teen angst movie about a deaf-mute girl who really isn't. People confide in her thinking that she won't tell anyone else, and then sometimes she intervenes. The incest theme can be a bit disturbing.
SnoopyStyle Dot (Camilla Belle) is a deaf mute orphan living with her godparents, the Deers. She's a loner at school, and pushed around by cheerleader Nina Deer (Elisha Cuthbert) and mean girlfriend Michelle Fell. The Deers are hiding some very dark secrets. The mother Olivia Deer (Edie Falco) is hooked on prescription drugs. Dot discovers Paul Deer (Martin Donovan) is sexually sleeping with daughter Nina. Dot is partnered with basketball star Connnor Kennedy (Shawn Ashmore) in class. He becomes intrigued when he sees her playing a piano. Then Nina discovers Dot may actually be able to hear.Dot being deaf or not being deaf is the best concept in this thriller. It's too bad that it's completely ruined by her narration. By itself, the narrations are boring and lame. The worst part is that it takes away from her deafness. The movie needs to play up her deafness, not play it down. She needs to do more signing and fake deaf talking. The mean girls should be trying to fake her out. Nina's discovery should be pushed back a bit. This should have been a big plus but the narration makes it a minor fail. The psycho sexual thriller is part camp and part awkward. Director Jamie Babbit never really nails down the tone. This all starts with the deaf issue. After failing so badly, the rest of the movie struggles to recover. This could have been an interesting thriller but the execution really screws it up.
Samiam3 Despite a stagy plot and a bit of over-written expository dialog at the beginning, The Quiet is a pretty good drama. Like David Cronenbergs Spider, this film is steeped in Atmosphere and psychology and it blurs the line between drama and thriller. It is a cold tale, but one that captures your attention and sustains it for an hour and a half.Dot is deaf and mute. since her father's passing she has moved in with her parents close friends Mr. and Mrs. Dear. They're daughter Elis goes is in Dot's class, and is not happy about her pressence in the house. Dot is lonely and nobody likes her. She sort of likes Elis until one night she learns that she is having a sexual relationship with her father. Elis has also discovered that Dot too has a very big secret. How long can the two keep things quiet?the film is driven mostly by an astonishing performance from Camilla Belle, backed up nicely by Elisha Cuthbert, and director Jamie Babbett knows how to milk suspense from softness and subtlty. Picture is bathed in a blue light most of the time. It's a very monochromatic picture, very cold very uncomforting uncomforting. This is definitely NOT a comforting film, but it's eerieness and surreal drama is impressive and makes for a good, thought provoking watch.
Claudio Carvalho The deaf and dumb teenager Dot (Camilla Belle) is adopted by the Deer family after the death of her father in an accident, and her seventeen year-old stepsister Nina (Elisha Cuthbert) gives a cold treatment to her, humiliating Dot in the high-school and at home. Nina's mother Olivia (Edie Falco), who is addicted in pills, was a close friend of Dot's mother and her husband Paul (Martin Donovan) is a successful architect. While living with the Deers, the invisible Nina discovers that they are actually a dysfunctional family with a dark secret that approaches her to Nina that also has discovered that Dot has a hidden secret. The classy and erotic "The Quiet" was a great surprise for me, with a dense and solid drama about an unpleasant theme – incest – that is unusual in American movies. Camilla Belle, Elisha Cuthbert, Martin Donovan and Edie Falco give top-notch performances, and the talented actress and pianist Camilla Belle is responsible for part of the stylish music score, playing Beethoven on the piano. The powerful story about invisibility and secrets may be controversial or polemic for many viewers, disturbing for others, but never disappointing. My vote is eight.Title (Brazil): "O Preço do Silêncio" ("The Price of the Silence")
