SoTrumpBelieve Must See Movie...
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Invaderbank The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
seanjkraynak I gave it a two because the actors did a fine job. But when I think of a "psychological thriller" it had better have an honorable concept or moral, in this case it only provokes the opposite of accountability or responsibility. If you relate to the protagonist, you are now a god who has trouble accepting the negative consequences of your actions. You create worlds and end worlds and there is some higher purpose but it's existential. This movie was most enjoyed by the millennial new age types who have reviewed it as an "inspiring work of art" but I'd recommend you ask yourself, what were you just inspired to do? Ignore the consequences because it doesn't matter... right existentialism is a brilliant philosophy which caught on because it allows people to be happy despite life troubles. But I do not personally accept the notion that it gives us a pass to live life on a whim. This movie has a destructive concept that serves the selfish to ignore the effects of their actions and ultimately give up on the people in their lives who they've built something with. 2/10
Jul Zar Alright, so I saw this movie since I have a thing with the number 9, like Melissa McCarthy and this was supposed to be some mystery in it. Well, even after reading other reviews I cannot understand what's mysterious about this movie. The end reveals everything as well as why three lives are intertwined. The only question popping up my head was "is this it?!?!" I read some reviews to see if I got it right and yes, that was it. Although beautifully put together and wonderfully acted, in my opinion The Nines is a pretty dull movie.
sol- Placed under house arrest, a television actor with drug problems starts experiencing strange and paranormal occurrences in this unusual thriller from 'Big Fish' and 'Corpse Bride' screenwriter John August. The title refers to the fact that, among other things, the actor seems to be plagued by the number nine in the form of dice roles, mousetraps set in his house, newspaper advertisements and so on. It is an undeniably intriguing premise, and one for which not a lot more can be said without ruining a fresh experience, but it can safely be said that the film is a triumph of mood and atmosphere. The film is divided into three chapters and the first is both suspenseful and unsettling as we are given little in the way of exposition. The final two chapters pale by comparison as more and more clues are dropped regarding the twist, but an ample amount of thought-provoking dialogue keeps things afloat. Several curious ideas abound such as "what life needs (is) a reset button" and a notion that actors don't "really exist" if nobody is watching them. A young pre-'Somewhere' Elle Fanning gives an excellent performance too that mostly comes out in the third chapter. Some have commented that the solution to the central mystery is underwhelming, and perhaps it is, but the personal identity issues that surface in the course of the film reaching its conclusion are endlessly absorbing. Reading about the film afterwards is also just as interesting; apparently August regards the movie as semiautobiographical, inspired by a part of his life in which he actually began to lose his grip on reality!
Mrs Salad This film is all about the possibilities of the beyond. How far can you stretch your imagination? I honestly have no idea how this movie has been rated so low, it really is beyond me. It's hard to say what this film's about without spoiling it, so I'll just say watch it and open your mind to the very edges of your mind's horizon. The movie is cut into 3 parts all containing the same actors, who play different roles in each part. It ties together in the end very nicely. The concept is pretty magical.Advice: If you read gossip mags, idolise the Kardashians, watch programs like Big Brother or anything on ITV you'll hate this movie as there's not enough glitter. Not that it's for the humble intellectual, but it's suited to people with imagination and a questioning nature.
