Dotsthavesp I wanted to but couldn't!
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
Charles Herold (cherold) The Myth is a very silly movie. The movie switches back and forth between modern and ancient times, and the ancient time story is particularly ludicrous right from the beginning, when a general tries to save a woman trapped in a burning carriage plunging over a cliff and it's obvious she could have just jumped out of the carriage onto the road instead of just sitting there looking scared. This was a number of laughable aspects in just this one scene. The modern parts were also pretty silly. Chan is an archaeologist who gets involved in a search for something or other while dreaming of a previous life as a general, and he has a stupid friend who gets him into all sorts of trouble. While the ancient scenes go for big epic-style sequences, the best action is in the modern bits, most notably in a terrifically fun little fight in some temple and in a very clever fight in a glue trap factory. The latter also shows off the film's cheesy instincts, as a beautiful woman starts the scene dressed in little and keeps losing clothes to the glue. The movie keeps going pretty well for the first half, as the movie progresses it begins to take itself more seriously, seemingly unaware that everything in it is laughable.I think this is one of those international movies where actors speak different languages, because Chan's dialogue seems to perfectly sync with his lips while other characters don't. This would also explain some weird acting issues in the English version, such as the beautiful woman the general is protecting having a breathy, little- girl, Marilyn Monroe-style voice. The movie is perfectly watchable and has some good scenes, but it's also a mess with no character development, sloppy plotting, and the movie's unconvincing conceit that the 50-something Chan is catnip to the movie's young, beautiful actresses.
ciarandino I didn't really enjoy this film terribly much. I found it to be a bit of a bore, and I f*cking love martial arts films. This film has no idea what it wants to be, and ends up trying to be several things at once. Martial arts comedy, archeology mystery and historical romance. It swings back and forth between present day Jackie Chan and his visions of his past life as the general, and it's pretty jarring, since we never really spend enough time in either story to get to like any of the characters. Not to mention that the two styles don't mesh well at all. As I said before, the present day is more comedic while the historical side is more serious and dramatic, and it's like watching two completely different films. Now I must mention a character I can't stand. OK Soo. Good god is this character annoying. She is the general's love interest, and all she does for the entire movie is whine and complain. There's nothing remotely compelling about her in any way. Also, there is the stock villain introduced about two thirds of the way into the movie, because, you know, we need a villain. They might as well call him 'Dark Evil Mcbadguy' because he was just so cliché and bland. Now, this isn't to say that there aren't good scenes in the movie. The opening scene is quite impressive, and I enjoyed the scene where Jack and his friend (who's name eludes me) are escaping from the angry locals in Dasar after they wreck the tomb in the temple. There is the scene in the glue factory, which I found to be quite enjoyable. However, the rest of it was pretty bland. I wish it had focused on the comedic martial arts archaeology story and cut out the historical scenes. I know that would make it a different movie, but that's just the side of the story that I find more compelling. Any-who, that's my review, so I must bid you adieu.
johnny-08 I don't know what is good in this movie?I can see only two things.First,Jackie Chen fighting scenes. That man can really do everything he wants with his opponents. But we all know that Jackie can fight without cascaders.Second,a I will only say the scene with glue. That is my favorite scene in this film.Bad sides are everything else.Special effects are bad and I think they ran out of money. The script is OK but sometimes you feel like this is too much.I couldn't bare to see the end of this movie. It is boring and long.Very, very long.I felt like there is no ending and we've all see that type of story.I think that the script was a little bit too much for the director. Those scenes where they actually fly are so poorly made that I didn't know what to do.To laugh or cry.I like Jackie Chen's work but this one is just bad.
ekwright Great cinematography and soundtrack. The acting is superb too, and I thought the out-takes at the end were a nice touch. There were parts of the movie that resembled a David Lean production. Five languages spoken in this movie - English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and (I think) Tamil! The costume design is reminiscent of Roman Army epics which make the columns of soldiers look very majestic - but their Chinese character is also retained. The movie takes part in two time periods - the Qin Dynasty and today. We are transported from one to the other through Jackie Chan's dreams. In the Qin Dynasty he plays the part of a general whose main responsibility is to protect a Korean princess who has been sent to serve as a concubine in the Imperial Chinese Court. Things get in the way of course, and the two time periods are brought together by a weaving of mythology which involves Indian temples and underground tombs at Xian. Well worth watching - but if you are not used to the genre you may find some aspects a little far fetched.
