Pjtaylor-96-138044 'The Ides Of March (2011)' is a competent and confident political thriller, well-written enough to be consistently entertaining but feeling like - and I'm sure this wasn't the case - it lacks a certain underlying passion. This, along with the cold and generally clichéd characters, makes it difficult to connect with anything happening on-screen. The entire endeavour floats along fairly quickly and flutters from your memory just as fast, feeling like it lacks a real through-line or any weighty themes - other than the undying cynicism of American politics. It isn't isn't a satire, either, and it plays it so straight that even its punchy dramatic moments aren't given the impact they deserve, instead just occurring with this kind of 'realist' apathy and thus not really having any impact. It's not bad, don't get me wrong, but it really is difficult to care for. There's enjoyment while it's unfolding, for no real reason other than its aforementioned confident competence, and it will certainly pass the time just fine. Maybe if political thrillers really are your thing, you'll get more out of this; it is well-made on all accounts. Honestly, it's difficult to remember, though. 6/10
bakhtiar_47 Apparently this movie is highly nerve-racking & very enticing. The work of art show cased by Ryan Gosling is remarkably outstanding. His plain faced reactions make it obvious that politics is dirty business & not for the saints. I had this movie in my watch list for quite a long time & having seen it finally made me realize how competitive it gets between Democrats & Republicans in the United States. Its a decent watch for those that adore politics & want to consider taking Public Relations as their college majors. Personally, after following the recent elections, I was compelled to watch this movie & boy I'm glad of this wonderful decision. Although, at certain point I kind'a grew a certain dislike for the character played by George Clooney. Nevertheless, a worthy flick.
Hitchcoc George Clooney plays a governor who is running for President. He is one of two serious candidates for the Democratic nomination. He is a bit too good to be true. He is adamant about the standard liberal issues and won't back down on them. Ryan Gosling plays his number two man along with campaign manager Philip Seymour Hoffman. One day Gosling makes a serious error. He goes to see the campaign manager of the other candidate. This is an absolute no no. His head is on the block. During this time he has a quick tryst with the daughter of the Democratic National Committee. She gives him a bit of information that could throw things into the septic system. Meanwhile, he is fired. Wanting his job back, he acts. This is really dirty politics and probably the kind of thing that is done behind the scenes all the time. Not a great political drama, but still very engaging.
songjiang2000 Even though promo material says "pulse-racing thriller," I didn't believe it and sat down to watch a potentially interesting political drama. I enjoyed the twists and turns that happened as the tension mounted, and just when I thought the movie would end on a down note as an okay morality tale about corruption in politics, I was jolted out of my seat. It was just at that moment that I remembered what "Ides of March" connotes. OMG. I've been waiting for a thriller like this! One that keeps your interest until the very last frame and then, bam! Except that in most thrillers there is a question that has to be answered and it doesn't get answered until the end. In this one, you're not even sure what the question is and bam! you get blindsided. Double the fun.I think some of the reviewers who rated this low didn't get the ending. And for those who think it is utterly cynical--I think they didn't get the ending either. Isn't Gosling's character a hero? Decide for yourself. For those who were expecting deep political ideas, or a statement about politics today, no doubt they were disappointed. This is a thriller, but unlike most thrillers where there is one protagonist who confronts danger and comes out on top, this one is all about the motives and decisions of the main players. Every twist is unexpected but makes perfect sense in retrospect. I think I'll watch it again tomorrow.
