One by one, a whole group of dwarves drop in, and before he knows it, Bilbo has joined their quest to reclaim their kingdom, taken from them by the evil dragon Smaug. The only problem is that Gandalf has told the dwarves that Bilbo is an expert burglar, but he isn't...

weirdok I remember not too long ago, when Tolkien fans would trash this cartoon saying it was silly, stupid and such. I felt weird because, I loved this cartoon to death! If you ask me. it was a much better adaptation than the mega budget recent production. The part that always glued me to the set and still gives me chills to hear today, is when Bard takes up the black arrow. Nuff said. This was one of the book's greatest moments and has never since been portrayed in film as successfully as in this film.Beat me with a stick if you like, but I love the songs too.The voice acting was incredible. I don't think people even have the capability today to enjoy the excellent characterizations and talent displayed in this wonderful little film. It's like going back to watch Lon Chaney portraying the "Phantom of the Opera" and really grasping what a fantastic silent actor he really was.Yet, you can! Give it a try. This is definitely like finding your old childhood teddy bear still quite huggable. :D
Gavin Cresswell (gavin-thelordofthefu-48-460297) When I heard that this was made by Rankin Bass, the company who made the stop-motion animation classics like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, The Little Drummer Boy, Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town and such, I gave this one a try when I was a kid. Then, after viewing, I didn't actually find it that bad. I think it's a very amusing film based on the book I later read. While I will admit that the 77 minute length is a bit short and there are several scenes from the book that are missing here which is the reason why I'm giving this an eight, it does have some good stuff in it. The animation is fantastic with beautiful colors in the backgrounds and some decent character animation. The characters are good too especially the main character Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf; let's just say the voice acting is pretty neat especially Orson Wells and John Huston. The story isn't anything to fault with either. It is faithful to the novel, but it does have some scenes that could frighten the kids real easily. The musical songs throughout the movie aren't that bad, too. The Greatest Adventure is beautiful (I liked it's reprises of the words from the song, by the way) and the others are decent.Overall, The Hobbit isn't an excellent by any means in the higher standards of the Peter Jackson films, but it's still a great film worth-recommending.
gkravik If you have not seen it, do it! ..(Sorry for the short review, however the truth needs not many words.) It is true to the book at point. And it is good.. Also it implements the singing in a short and loving way. It does have more in common with the books, than the new movies coming out now a days.. Peter Jackson does a great job! And the three should not be compared, really..But, this is the greatest filmization I have seen of the hobbit.. And I have been a fan since I learned to read, .. And perhaps even before that again.. (PS: I was Born in 1983.)
siderite I am rating below average because it is really quaint, with choir songs that tell the story and all characters in the film seeming rather simple minded. The animation is not great either, but today's standards, probably looking old even by 1977 standards. The story is that of a hobbit convinced (almost coerced) by Gandalf to go on an adventure with some dwarfs. His purpose: a burglar, to get some gold and split it with the 13 dwarfs. Of course, there is something weird with that, but only at the end Gandalf's plan will be revealed. The characters are all goofy, including Gandalf, and for no good reason, either. While I enjoyed watching it, the film rather bored me and I would not recommend it to anyone.
