Freaktana A Major Disappointment
Nayan Gough A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
lukem-52760 Just like Friday the 13th 1&2 this is a true Horror classic. Set at a summer camp this is another fun as hell slasher flick & one of the best ever made right at that time 1981 when so many CLASSIC Horror films seemed to come out!!! 80s was a beautiful time for Horror & here is one of the most fun with some Amazing gruesome scenes, the killer looks Awesome & the cast is great fun.No need to go on about story & all as it's simply just a great well made Slasher with beautiful locations & scenes!!! Just enjoy
hellraiser7 This film is another under the radar horror gem, it's not one of my favorite slasher horror film per say but I had fun with it all the same. Yeah, it's a "Friday the 13th" knock off but same can be said on a lot of other slashers that have used the summer camp setting, and as long as the film is plain fun I honestly don't mind, which is what this film really is. This film truly is a gem under the radar because at the time I honestly didn't even know it existed; fun fact despite all the horror film in the 80's this film never came out to VHS at all, it's actually true with a lot of other movies out there. It wasn't until it came out to DVD when DVD's at the time were on the rise was how I heard about it; it was a real treat watching it because we have another relic from the 80's we missed out on.Nothing much to say the plotline is the familiar formula you've seen in dozens of others on a campfire tale legend come to life, though I find it humorously ironic their camp is located near a river called Devil's Creek, yeah you just know with a name like that the camp is a killzone. The characters they serve their functions, they're not deep hey it's a slasher film what do you expect. Though there are a few characters that stand out that I thought were decent, Brian Backer whom I've seen from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol" is Alfred whom is a person that is on the shy side, has trouble socializing and has a habit of snooping, he's not a peeping tom per say just someone that's just a bit overly curious. One of the things that stands out is the three famous faces you spot from Jason Alexander from "Seinfeld" and "Duckman" he another character I like not just because it's the actor, but he had some crass personality which made him a little funny. Hunter from "The Incredibles 1 and 2" whom has a small role she was in it a few scenes. Fisher Stevens from "Hackers" and TV show "Early Edition" he plays Woodstock whom is sort of a smart ass character and one that supplies most humor. I'll admit it really surprised me but then again, it's actually true about most well known actors and actresses, their start was most of the time in horror films so this fact was cool. But like with all slasher films we're in it for the suspense and kills. The cinematography is good, you get some of the point of view shots of Cropsey and also the use of the wooded location. I really like the music which is one of my honorable mentions tracks, from the theme which I thought was memorable along with several other tunes in scenes of the film. Almost reminds me of the music I would hear in the gillalo horror movies, which makes it all the better because it really added to the film for me.And of course, the practically effects are solid whom are done by my favorite make up effects artist Tom Savini, the blood effects I think are top notch really makes you afraid of big sheers again. You see the hacking and slashing, as well as someone actually getting their fingers cut off, which still makes me wince; there are plenty of good kills though the most memorable is the rafting massacre.I even thought the design of the Cropsey monster was solid. I honestly didn't feel the make-up result disappointed I felt perfect reflected Cropsey's dark psyche as he's became an inhuman monster. On a side note though Tom would say otherwise as I heard he wasn't satisfied with it, but to each his own though I do wonder what face for Cropsey he really had in mind. Even like the outfit of Cropsey as he has a dark rain coat and hat, he's covered so much in black it's the perfect outfit to conceal his identity but really gave him menace almost like a modern day grim reaper. On another side note this monster and film was one of the inspirations for the survival horror video game "Clock Tower" as the monster in that game is also armed with giant sheers. There are some solid suspenseful and slightly scary sequences like seeing a group on the raft rowing toward one of their lost canoes which look vacant, but like I said look. I remember being on the edge of my seat and griping it a little hard because I already knew what was coming and I remember thinking, no no don't row toward it it's a trap! And there is a chase scene which is on my list of honorable mentions of favorite chases as Alfred is being chased by Cropsey on foot. That also put me on the edge of my seat hoping Alfred can get far enough away from Cropsey; I'll admit just looking at Alfred all soaked with sweat and breathing hard, made me tired looking at him, just seeing him and where's he's at in the woods it gives you a feeling he's been running for a very long time almost marathon length. There was also one scene near the end which creeped me out, where the storyteller in the campfire say the last lines and he suddenly gets to the final line, which gave me a slight chill because they way he says it was intense and gave that feeling that danger is near.Overall this is a solid slasher film, it, so if you look for any other under the radar Slasher horror this film is worth a look, you won't get burned.Rating: 3 stars
yawael Because i'm kind of 80s horror slasher films i couldn't wait till watching this one, and that's because it was praised by horror fans and critics. but i must say that i didn't know what was all the fuss about ! The Beginning of the film was kind of promising we see a prank played by group of teenagers which goes wrong and burns a guy then after five years he gets out of the hospital and starts to kill teenagers at the camp ( in a way of revenge). The first murder he committed was to a prostitute which i found kind of bizarre, why he did that to her! (he must kills the boys who were responsible of his accident) , even when he goes to kill boys and girls at the camp you just keep asking yourself the same question ( why he's killing them although they are not the same dudes who made the prank!)Another thing was that the director killed this character right away from the start by showing his face through the window (they should kept his face kind of a mystify till the end of the film) and the second crime he commits goes around half an hour from the first one which makes you bored. One of the biggest mistakes was the killing and the slaughtering scenes (they really were terrible) ,because you just couldn't see it clearly even the last fight with the two heroes was also unclear ( although now we know how the guy looks like, but they just kept the fight vague and blurry ) . As for the characters , honestly i only liked Todd character which was played by Brian Matthews, as for the rest of the cast they were okay and Jason Alexander presence was so enjoyable . The only one i couldn't stand was Brian Backer, i didn't know whether he was a victim, lunatic or a complicated guy. he just tries the whole time to make feels sorry for him in the wrong direction ( he just kept showing us a silly performance with terrible body langue : honestly when he was running away from the burned guy i couldn't tell whether he was scared or having something else !!!.
David Marcos Whenever someone asks me to recommend them a slasher film, The Burning is always at the top of the list. Not only does it feature a recognizable cast of up and coming soon-to-be-stars, but it has career-best work by makeup artist Tom Savini, a wicked score by Rick Wakeman, and an impressive series of set pieces. The plot is your usual summer camp slash 'n dash stuff - a camp caretaker is left horribly burned after a prank goes wrong and, years later, he returns to make sure all the kids at Camp Blackfoot have as bad a time as he did.Let's face it, that's not exactly reinventing the wheel, but there's a lot to recommend her. Almost all the death scenes pack a nasty punch, the characters are semi-interesting, and there's a good deal of atmosphere. The Burning is one to proudly put next to Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp in your "summer camp horror" collection.
