Bereamic Awesome Movie
SanEat A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
Caryl It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Aaron1375 I saw this film once as a kid and the main thing I remember about it is the fact that the monsters of the piece are almost a no show throughout said movie and that when I did see them they looked like some sort of turtle and snake. Years later, I get the film on DVD and watch it and I was correct, the monsters are a no show through most of the flick, but what I saw as a kid and processed looked so much better than what I see as an adult. This is also a case of a horror film being almost a really good film, but being underdone by several factors. The story has a couple of friends working with these other two older gentlemen trying to reopen a mine that was shut down in the early 1900's due to strange circumstances. They blast open a portion of the mine and then we get introduced to one of the younger guy's girlfriend and her friend and a dog that nobody seems to like who is seemingly near death at every step of the film! Well, when they blasted open a portion of the mine, they let loose some sort or creature, or creatures as the title implies and soon it is on a rampage; however, we mainly get to see new relationships budding, people losing at pool and missed sex opportunities. The film was almost good, but it spends way too much time focusing on stupid stuff rather than the poorly established monsters. Seriously, why not add a few more townspeople into the film, the old guy at the end says there are tunnels all through the place, why do they only attack the one house? Why did knocking out one cave close them up so thoroughly and why is Boogens plural when there is never more than one on screen at a time? Never before has a monster been implied so much until The Blair Witch came along! So, no, this film just had to much wrong with it to be a good horror film. It had enough going for it though to not be a total disaster though too. A couple of good kills and a good premise help it rise above being totally bad, too bad so much holds it back such as spending way too much time on stuff not related to the monsters. Speaking of them, when we finally see them, or it, they look almost cute!
Predrag "The Boogens", despite its name, is a well paced horror film which pays justice to the cult monster movies of the 1950's. The editing style gives the viewer a well balanced blend of suspense, shock and gore to make the film both eerie and frightening. Old, forgotten evil and shunned places have informed some of the best horror ever since H. P. Lovecraft first set foot in haunted Arkham. Therefore, "The Boogens", with its eerie mine shafts and mysterious creatures has a lot going for it. Thankfully, the director doesn't saddle the film with dumb-as-dirt characters and goofy clichés. We actually come to care for these people(a titanic achievement for many of today's filmmakers). A great emphasis is placed on generating suspense in lieu of tiresome "pop-ups." A product of budgetary concerns, this nonetheless works in the film's favor. If the titular monsters are less than life-like, at least the smart editing obscures this.On the plus side, the cast is kind of fun, with recognizable faces Rebecca Balding (Silent Scream and TV's Soap) Fred McCarren (Xanadu), Anne-Marie Martin (Dori Doreau on TV's Sledge Hammer!) and veteran character actors John Crawford (all over 60's and 70's television, like Batman and Mission Impossible) and Jon Lormer (Creepshow). The Boogens themselves are mostly represented through low to the ground point of view shots for the first hour or so in classic pre CGI monster movie style until they are finally revealed in all their early 80's animatronics glory near the climax. All in all, this one almost succeeds, but the draggy middle and lack of exposition end up making it only for 80's horror completists in the end.Overall rating: 7 out of 10.
meddlecore The Boogens is a mining-related horror about re-opening a formerly operative mine, and unwittingly releasing a deadly malevolent force in the process. It's comparable to something like The Strangeness- a film clearly influenced by The Boogens- albeit with less chauvinistic humour. The only real difference between the two films is that, in The Strangeness, the group is stuck underground with the monster they've unleashed; whereas, in The Boogens, the monster is able to leave the mine, so that it can hunt and kill those who have trespassed into it's realm. Oh, and this one takes place in a silver mine, as opposed to a gold mine (like in The Strangeness). This film is not very good on any level really. The tentacled turtle-like monster is kinda budget (though certainly cooler than anything CGI has to offer); the kills are pretty weak; and the plot is relatively basic.Things start to get a bit ridiculous after two of the men find a pile of human remains- the remnants of the former miners...and the monster's dinner. Despite properly analyzing the situation, they decide to continue on, driven by greed instead of common sense. It's not until one of the locals enters the mine- armed with a warning and few sticks of dynamite- that the men acknowledge something is up. This man plans to blow the mine shut, trapping them all inside with the monster, so that it cannot completely escape.Films like this are largely predictable and always seem to end with an explosion.I mean, it's not cinemasochistically unwatchable, but it's also nothing more than mediocre. I wouldn't fret if you've missed it. The monster in The Strangeness is cooler, though, I suppose some credit is due here for it's influence.4 out of 10
AaronCapenBanner Despite a title that provokes laughter and/or bewilderment, this is an effective monster film, well directed by James L. Conway, who creates an eerie and claustrophobic feel in the remote Colorado locations, where a re-opened mine unleashes underground monsters that kill nearby residents. Interesting opening uses old newspaper clippings to tell the back story on how the mine had been closed decades earlier after mysterious killings occurred.Only downside is that, when the monsters are revealed at the end, they do not impress, since they do look silly, but are an effective menace in the shadows, with their sinister roaring creating an atmospheric feel that leads to a memorable fiery climax.Worth a look, and not terrible like some critics claimed.
