elliott78212 Lets do the bad first, some of the acting is barely adequate but overall acceptable and in moments good, at times the direction slows. Now the good even though the direction and pace slow it moves along the storyline never diverging into needless subtext. The plot line is very original from the moment the Blood Soaked Harbinger appears to the last reel. This movie grabs you, mesmerizing, scary, creepy on many levels and its never over the top gory or excessively violent. The secluded area begins to block you in creating an atmospheric claustrophobia, while the revelation of the killer is not as much a twist as it could have been you'll still find it satisfying.
itsbaylis What the hell was that all about then? Damned if I know, but it was awful. This film was another I saw at my University's SU bar for free (and I only saw it because I was told it was Shallow GRAVE) and I want my money back.It has about the same scare factor as being in a really comfy armchair with a nice cup of tea and a soothing CD on, is as satisfying as a half eaten pot noodle, and makes about as much sense as a semi-comatose, acid tripping man with no hands trying to communicate through sign language.I mean what the hell was going on? I missed the opening 10-15 minutes as I was getting food (the diversion being a far more interesting experience than the film, and as I recall more scare-filled too) and as such assumed that I was lost because of this. I asked all my friends and they informed me it was not because I had been late, but because the film sucked more than a prostitutes industrial hoover.I still don't know what this film was ultimately about, and frankly the sequel-aimed ending made me fly into a semi murderous rage at the prospect, before I calmed down with the realisation that no film this mind numbingly boring and, to be frank, stupid, would ever get a sequel.
terrible2 I wasn't expecting much when I purchased "Shallow Ground" for 5 bucks at my favorite video store. I watched the "Making Of" segment in the special features and learned that the film only cost $72,000.00 to make, now I was REALLY not expecting much... I was quite surprised by the quality of the film, suspenseful, creepy and well acted, director Sheldon Wilson had certainly done his homework. The story evolves around a state forest Ranger station in the middle of nowhere, and some missing people to add a little spice. Now throw in a blood drenched naked guy who doesn't say much, and what you've got is a nice little evening of "blood, guts, boobs & butts"... The film moves along at an even pace and builds the suspense to great effect. Wilson uses the blood (and plenty of it) as a villain itself, which certainly adds to the "horror" of the story. The film does slow down a bit towards the end, and the finale becomes less then stellar, but the cast hold true their characters and convey believable performances. It was a well spent 5 bucks, and "Shallow Ground" delivers an evening of bloody fun.
selenedm999 I'm a horror fan from way back, and am always looking for interesting twists on the genre. There's really only so much you can do with blood and guts and creepy guys in the woods, so the audience gets bored quickly. I doubt the slasher genre will ever really go away, because people who've been long-term fans grow up and start making their own movies, but they're conscious that there's a blase fan base and a long history preceding them.So we get movies like this one. I think it probably made more sense in the writer/director's head, although you catch on pretty quickly through its (unfortunately) fairly standard suspense setups and "No, it was Jason's MOTHER" type twists. Even the twists are getting predictable. ---------spoiler below----------- ---------stop reading if you don't want a spoiler--------------------What was interesting about this movie was the idea not that the dead are getting up and looking for justice, but the idea of who's responsible for the deaths in the first place, since the main targets are people in authority. It examines an interesting question of who's really responsible for a tragedy, which is why I liked it, outside of the usual gore and guts movies. And the end was cool. :)
