Moustroll Good movie but grossly overrated
Intcatinfo A Masterpiece!
Beystiman It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Leofwine_draca PUMPING IRON is a bodybuilding documentary that feels very much a product of its time. The film follows the fortunes of various rival weight trainers as they compete for the prestitious Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia competitions. It's most well-known today for being the film that introduced the inimitable Arnold Schwarzenegger and his larger-than-life character to the masses. A young and goofy Schwarzenegger is endearing as ever here, sharing camaraderie with his peers and always trying to play mind games even when not on the stage. The film is a little fake and scripted at times, but to my mind this makes the subject matter that bit more entertaining. A lot of the laughs come from the presence of Lou Ferrigno, presented as a real slow-witted character one step behind everybody else. PUMPING IRON is good enough to be enjoyed even if you're not a fan of the whole bodybuilding scene.
Geeky Randy Nicely filmed docudrama about the sport of bodybuilding. Ken Waller, Ed Corny, Mike Katz and Franco Columbu all make appearances, with the latter two having their own brief segments, but the film's main focus is on five-time champion Arnold Schwarzenegger defending his Mr. Olympia title against Lou Ferrigno and Serge Nubret. Partly scripted, with some stories being a bit embellished or possibly completely made up. Completion stalled for a couple of years due to budgetary problems, but Schwarzenegger and other bodybuilders helped raise funds to continue filming. Yes, this is the movie where Arnold compares working out to sex—and it's a humorously ridiculous analogy even in the context of this film.*** (out of four)
Max Harbord I did not have particularly high expectations of this film when I first came to watch it, but I left the screen with a new found knowledge of bodybuilding, an area which I had never seen on film before, and was inspired more than ever to get training! I really liked this film a lot. I found it very interesting to have entered this new world of bodybuilding and I now have a much better understanding of what the sport is all about. I found Arnold Shwarzenegger to be very funny throughout this film and enjoyed watching his journey. I would highly recommend this film to just about anyone and I hope it can inspire you too.
