JinRoz For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!
Hadrina The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
chow913 Good Lord, this is the horror version of 'The Room' where some scenes are so silly it can only be considered an unintentionally bad comedy.5.7? This has a rating of 5.7 here? WTF? Standard slasher plot: College professor Ray Waltson has his film students renovate an old movie theater to show 50's B horror films for a single night.First off, WTF does film making have to with construction and renovation? Also, they're renovating a condemned building just for a one night show? Also, we see no promotion for the theater, begging the question, how did they get a sold out show? They could have at least shown a montage of the students handing out fliers. The first truly mind numbing scene is the montage of the students fixing up the theater. It looks like those legendarily bad European Mentos ads. Only worse! So on the big night the killer emerges. He peels off the flesh of his victims and wears them like masks to disguise himself because apparently that's how human tissue works! Just stick someone else's face on your own and you'll look just like that person. And WTF is the killer targeting the students?...... That's never answered! Oh, he explains why he's a deformed psycho. As a child his mother was cheating on his father so he burned down the theater killing her, but he was burned and his face disfigured. So WTF does this have to do with the students? His revenge motives are unclear. This villain's motive explanation scene is the funniest as it goes on and on and on for about fifteen minutes! Also, the killer's voice and movements are like all of Jim Carrey's 'In Living Color' characters rolled into one! HTF are we supposed to take this seriously?Like 'Shanghai Surprise' this movie is a special kind of intentional atomicity. It's not just the result of a low budget, bad actors, or poor film making. It's a deliberate well planned massacre of cinema. The fact that these scenes were written, acted, recorded, and edited together by dozens of people working together is truly disturbing. This film is totally devoid of any entertainment value even for laughs. We seriously have to wonder what was happening behind the scenes that created.
Red-Barracuda A group of film students organise an all-night horror marathon at an old movie theatre to raise funds. Trouble is, there is a maniac in the house who starts a killing spree this night.Popcorn came in at the tail-end of the first slasher wave. The genre had been treading water for years, meaning that new entries at this time had to try and find new original angles to base their slasher antics around in order to keep people interested. Popcorn takes a more comical approach, without going out-and-out for laughs entirely at the expense of its horror. It does admittedly have some fairly original ideas, namely the way the films-within-the film are integrated into the story. Those movies are a series of 50's/60's B-flicks with ludicrous gimmicks of the exact same type that William Castle was famous for producing. 'Mosquito' has a giant model insect that flies over the auditorium, 'The Amazing Electrified Man' has audience members receiving shocks from electrified seats and 'The Stench' has a selection of odours. Except, of course, these gimmicks are in fact used by the maniac to kill people in the theatre! In theory, this all sounds quite good but unfortunately I found Popcorn as a whole somewhat lacking and uninvolving. Despite its reasonable set-up it essentially goes through the motions and you are left not remembering an awful lot about it by the end. Although it was admittedly somewhat unexpected to see regular Woody Allen actor Tony Roberts appear in a role as a popular teacher. It's quite a contrast going from starring in the all-time classic Annie Hall to being impaled by a giant puppet mosquito in Popcorn!
gavin6942 To help raise money, a film class decides to throw a horror movie marathon featuring old films. But one they stumble on, "Possesor" is connected to a cultist from the 1960s, and it soon seems he has returned to kill off theater patrons.I stumbled across this film when video stores began switching to DVD and were selling their VHS for cheap. I had not heard of it at that point, but soon loved it, and its star, Jill Schoelen (who was great in this, as well as everything she has ever done). Perhaps as DVDs are replaced by Blu-Ray, I will again have the luck to acquire this title cheaply. The film is well-scripted, really plays up classic films and film nerd knowledge, but what really sells it are the films featured in the film. Both "Mosquito" and "The Stench" call to mind the gimmicks of William Castle, and the film "Possessor" is a scary film all its own (and should be included as a bonus feature on the DVD).I think the film is relatively unknown and not highly praised, as many may consider it "just another slasher", but it's really more deep and well thought out than that. This is not the basic teenagers dying flick, there is a real mystery and some odd back story -- how is the lead character's mother involved, for example? I would urge people to seek this one out, and if a decent DVD does not yet exist, I hope some company comes along and gives us a fully loaded one like this film deserves.
atinder This not to bad at all, all got to do enjoy this movie sit down with Popcorn and watch popcorn.A Group of teens plan an all-night horror film festival from movies that were made in 50's that was made in 3D and all the seats seem to have electrical shockers on them.Maggie seem to having these nightmare about man who lost in life in fire in the same place few years ago, after he was being casted into a movie made by Maggie. Now Maggie think that man is back from the dead and then she find out her friends are dying one by one by this man. This is really good (very) cheesy horror movie, you need to be a really cheesy mood to watch this movie, or you will really hate it! I had fun watching this movie so i going to give this movie 5 out of 10
