Kattiera Nana I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Lovesusti The Worst Film Ever
Tayyab Torres Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
Roxie The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
seeingbystarlight Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn) is an obscenely wealthy, married socialite with nothing to do but languish in her large yacht, painting her nails in an array of skimpy bathsuits.Then disaster strikes:Joanna needs some additions made to her closet, and for this she calls Dean Profitt, a struggling, happy-go-lucky carpenter with four boys to raise, and no wife to help him.After he's finished doing two days worth of work, Joanna complains that the wood is oak instead of cedar, and every carpenter who knows his salt should be aware that closets are made out of cedar not oak.On these grounds, she refuses to pay Dean what she owes him, and when he protests, she throws him, and his tools overboard.Dean vows revenge, but never dreams he'll get it...until Joanna has an accident, falling out of her yacht, and washing up on shore in Dean's tiny little town with amnesia.And though Joanna's husband (Edward Hermann) is perfectly capable of reclaiming his wife, he chooses instead to seize the day, and go on a pleasure cruise with a group of starlets, clearing the way for Dean to get his revenge.Bursting with plans to get back at her, he eagerly reclaims his "wife", and makes her the keeper of of his little shack, and the mother of his four rowdy boys.He makes her sleep on the couch because of her " bad back", and insists that not too long ago she was big as a balloon, therefore she has to wear dresses that are hideous, and twelve sizes too big.The story may seem predictable but it is, in fact, rather wonderful.It's funny, it's bright, and it has a surprising amount of subplots to make it interesting.There's even a legend about two lovers, and the sea which is where the title of this review came from.The direction by Gary Marshall is excellent.And the chemistry between Goldie Hawn, and Kurt Russell really makes the movie.Edward Hermann really adds in his cameo role as the dissolute husband.Wonderful movie. One of my favorites. Really a nice surprise!Originally, Review #63Posted On: April 22, 2010
Jack Vasen This movie doesn't take itself seriously, so how do you describe it in the usual terms of plot, acting, and direction. The plot is predictable and ridiculous but it's still great. The acting? Looks like they had a great time doing it and it was fun to watch so who cares. The movie turned out great so the directing was fine.It's a cute love story with the usual 1) they hate each other, 2) they fall in love, 3) something breaks them up, and 4) well you know how that goes.Goldie Hawn is adorable. I thought she overplayed the rich witch a little, but then that was how all the rich people were played. Kurt Russell is fine, but besides Hawn, the stars were the kids.I loved the last line of the movie.
bkoganbing Kurt Russell plays the widowed father of four boys who are as far from the Brady Bunch as you can get. He's a bit of a big kid himself who thinks just paying the bills and providing food and a roof is all that matters. In fact rich Hollywood heiress Goldie Hawn hires him to redo her shoe closet on her yacht while they are vacationing in the Pacific Northwest in the Columbia River. When it doesn't meet her most exacting standard she stiffs Russell on the $600.00 she was going to pay him. But when Goldie falls overboard in the middle of the night and acquires a case of amnesia, Kurt claims her as his bride and she goes off to become his bond servant.Strange things do happen and eventually Goldie starts really thinking she belongs with him after some rough initiation. House work and she are strangers. It's helped however by the fact she has one drip of a husband in Edward Herrmann. And her work ethic was acquired from her mother Katherine Helmond who apparently understudied with the Helmsley family.Kurt and Goldie and the 4 kid actors who play Kurt's kids in Overboard provide the best scenes in the film. Sad to say it gets so raunchy a G rating is impossible. Still the PG is there even if close to the wire. Overboard is the perfect kind of vehicle for Kurt and Goldie and their fans will eat it up.So will the rest of the movie going public.
Predrag The concept and the plot lines were funny and unique. The contrast between the working family and the ultra rich one, the ending where she chooses to have a life where she makes a difference instead of just wasting time, and he values her as she deserves to be valued in the end. There are parts of the movie that could have been better; some of the supporting roles were not done all that well. Although the story is kind of predictable it still is nice to watch. Not alone due the great chemistry between Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn is worth looking at, but also how Goldies character changes from über-posh and spoiled brat to down to earth and loving wife."Overboard" is a really enjoyable fun rollicking film and enough if taken on its own unambitious terms. Hawn is a hoot, especially in the opening scenes, and she and Russell have great on screen chemistry. The film itself is a mishmash, a sort of warmed over sitcom that has just a hint of the smarmy in its main conceit. By no means is it the best when it comes to romantic comedies but it is a cheerful romantic comedy with that 80's style.Overall rating: 8 out of 10.
