During the invasion of Normandy the photograph of a slim Korean man in German uniform was found. It transpired that the man had served as a soldier in the Japanese, Russian and German armies. His incredible story inspired director Kang Je-Gyu to create this epic war drama.

Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Taha Avalos The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
deebadola My heart felt every second of this movie and finally become awe stack. the script and cinematography are awesome. The love, hate relationship of two childhood friends and the cruelty of war are manifested so properly. It is a awesome choice for war movie loving people.thumbs up the "MY WAY team".
C. Caner Telimenli This is a production which shows us the people in pursuit of some ideals who think anything would be suitable to achieve that goal can be terribly misguided in their actions. The movie tells us the real difference between any kind of two people lays only on surface, and the real challenge with virtue is to understand the other person. Its a good movie with a right message even tough it has some mistakes in it.I am not going to say much about factual or continuation errors in the movie, all I can say they are not intolerable. But I can recommend this movie without hesitation to any human. Its a great example what happens when you chose to fight rather than putting aside your differences.
Michael Whitt First of all, I am absolutely in shock that the ratings for this film are so low. Especially the metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes reviews; they usually are able to decipher an amazing movie from a shamble. Moving on. The story of the movie is, bar none, without a doubt, one of the absolute best in the last 50 years of war movies. For those who know little about the Korean part in the Imperial Army, many Koreans were forced to fight for the Japanese Army. Those caught in unfortunate situations, those who lived in Japan at the time, and also prisoners. This movie takes a strong jab at the WWII movie genre and ends up as a personal favorite, definitely my favorite war film released in the last decade. The plot is vicious, but well-rounded, emotional, and also generally historically accurate. The special effects are in-par with any blockbuster that had an enormous budget. However, probably due to technological advances in the last decade, I feel as if the money is well-spent. The effects aren't OVERLY done, yet capture many horrors of war. The story doesn't dwell on death, and shows promise of life, which is a rare balance to maintain. This movie will make you feel for the characters. The protagonists and the antagonists are developed very well, as expected from a 2+ hour movie. Seeing a movie about WWII that isn't made in the Western world is rare. Seeing one that is done VERY WELL, and that isn't propaganda or incredibly biased, and that has an AMAZING story that is easy to follow is a masterpiece, and this one falls nothing short of one. Lastly, I have been seeing reviews and comments about "they didn't like it because it was hard to follow".... In regards to that, as long as you can read, or understand the languages, you can ignore everyone else saying it's hard to understand.....As it is a foreign film with foreign names, you must pay attention to really understand all of the pieces involved, and if you can't pay attention long enough to understand the dialogue (i.e. not checking your phone and missing three sentences of speech), you shouldn't be critiquing a movie or providing a review. I absolutely love this film and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys foreign films, war movies, or hardcore dramas. 95/100
Gunther Ceulemans 30.000.000.000 South Korean Won is the estimated budget of this Korean masterpiece. Sounds like a big amount, but at today's exchange rate (1 KRW = 0.000860807 USD) that makes just under 26mio USD. For this budget, 'Mai Wei' manages to equal the most memorable wide-angle scenes from saving private Ryan (budget 70mio USD) and enemy at the gates (68 mio USD). Kinda makes you wonder what these Koreans could do with a budget of 200mio USD.The story of this movie spans such a vast geographical area and a huge scope of events, however never fails to show those little sides of man. The characters are not black and white and they evolve throughout the story. You really get a feeling that war is basically people going through the same misery, making the same mistakes, just in a different setting. In fact, some people in this movie even learn from their mistakes, which is original. An emotional roller-coaster around the world in which people actually speak different languages, rather than English accents.
