Roman Sampson One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
OllieSuave-007 The title of this movie sounds somewhat enticing - New York building designer guy Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson) dumps Jenny Johnson (Jenny Johnson), a reluctant superhero known as G-Girl. As revenge, she uses her powers to make Matt's life miserable. While Matt courts his beautiful work partner Hannah (Anna Faris), G-Girl's enemy and former sweetheart, Professor Bedlam (Eddie Izzard), attempts to use Matt to lure Jenny to strip her superpowers. This movie obviously uses the superhero formula, but mixes all the action and adventure with corny jokes, forced comedy and mostly lame acting. There are some light-hearted and action-packed moments (with cool special effects), particularly involving Matt's frustrated chemistry with Jenny and her using her superpowers in the city. Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman's acting were OK, Anna Faris was descent, but Rainn Wilson was plain annoying. The story was below average overall as the plot dragged somewhat - very little substance or suspense, mostly relying on the cheap jokes and uninspiring "superhero" action. I was surprised to learn that Ivan Reitman actually directed this film. After directing great movie hits such as Ghostbusters and Kindergarten Cop, this movie is a bit of a let-down coming from him.Bottom line, it wouldn't hurt to spend your time watching something else.Grade D
Wizard-8 When I first heard about the premise for "My Super Ex-Girlfriend", I thought it sounded pretty promising. A super hero with relationship problems? It's ripe for humor. Then the bad reviews came out for it, and I lost interest in watching it. But when it came on TV recently, I decided to give it a look, since I wouldn't be wasting money if it turned out to be bad.To be fair, the movie does have its moments. There is a funny parody of the romantic Superman/Lois Lane night flight from the first "Superman" movie, and there is also a funny scene when the city is in danger from a missile but the female superhero character wants to ignore it over a night out on the town. I could probably find a few other moments that score with a little more thought, but the negativity I found in the movie outweighs the positive stuff. One problem is that the movie sets up the situation in an often awkward way. The presence of the superwoman is taken for granted and it's not detailed how society views her. The super villain of the movie is described as her enemy, but we don't SEE this for the longest time. There are additional script problems that further sink the enterprise. I didn't really care for the male lead character or any of his associates. They all act goofy in a way that's annoying and not endearing. Also, the movie seems very drawn out, even though it runs only 96 minutes long. It should have been more snappy in its pace. Director Ivan Reitman doesn't seem to know what the movie's tone should have been like. It doesn't help that the outfit providing the movie's special effects doesn't seem ready for a big budget feature film - the effects look like they were made for a TV show. This movie doesn't make the ultimate sin a movie can make - by being boring. However, I think most viewers will find the movie simply unfunny and with nobody to care about. Skip this one.
Chrysanthepop Considering the concept and a cast that includes Luke Wilson, Uma Thurman, Anna Faris, Wanda Sykes and Rainn Wilson I was expecting something funny. 'My Super Ex-Girlfriend' has its moments in the first half but the writing is inconsistent and lacking in imagination. The characterization is also at fault. While the first half has some funny moments, largely thanks to the cast, the second half shifts from dreadful to abysmal. The movie neither works as a superhero action flick nor a romantic comedy. While the chemistry between Luke Wilson, Uma Thurman and Anna Faris is good, the whole Eddie Izzard track felt forced and out of place. Sykes is wasted and Rainn Wilson is cast as the clichéd horny geeky friend who rambles on about sex. Speaking of clichés, much of the humour is formulaic and over-the-top. I also found the change of haircolor from brown to blonde or blonde to red, the enlargement of breasts etc as they change from women to superheroine to be at least a bit superficial. Anyway, 'My Super Ex-Girlfriend' could have easily been better but it isn't much good now.
DrunkUniStudent Jenny Johnson (Thurman) is sitting on train when Saunders (Wilson) tries to ask her out, in the middle of this a thug nick Johnson bag. Saunders gives chase and gets back the bag. Johnson is so thankful she agrees to go out with him. After dating for a bit Johnson tells Saunders her alter ego G-Girl. After tell him Johnson turns into a crazy jealous bitch so Saunders dumps her, she then makes his life a living hell.I decided i would skyplus this film for when i was bored and has nothing else to do. Looking at the cast i thought a film with Luke Wilson in would have lots of laugh out loud moments, how wrong could i have been. This film seems to just drag on, and made me just as bored if i was watching paint dry.As with most Rom Coms you know which character Matt Saunders would end up with after the 1st 10 minutes of the film. Also it you know that either the pretty girl will either have a fat friend or the man will have a not so good-looking pervert and the latter was true in this. The friend is normally the comic relief but i found the character annoying and not amusing. The only couple of funny moment (minor spoilers) are when G-girl flies so fast round the meeting room at all Saunders clothes come off so he stark naked in an important business meting and when Saunders and his super girlfriend are shagging so hard they make the bed go through the wall, much to his neighbour surprise. The two leads just seemed to be there for the money and really looked liked they couldn't be bothered how the film turned out and it showed, while Anna Faris seemed to play the normal Anna Faris character, the likable but dump-witted blond. The best character in the film was Carla Dunkirk played by Wanda Sykes. She only had two scenes in the film, but she played her feminist, up in the mans face well.I would recommend, that nobody buys or rents this film and only watch this film if you really really have nothing in your life better to do. 3/10Read more of my reviews here: http://cinemadvdreviews.blogspot.com/
