Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
fnj2002 It's clear that some people put a lot of work and sincerity into making this production. But that is not enough. This work was ambitious, but fails quite comprehensively. Apparently there was no technical adviser, or he was not knowledgeable, or he was not listened to.U-boat captains did not wear immaculate uniforms while on war patrol. All you have to do is watch Das Boot to know this, but it is well covered in the literature as well if you do your research.WW-II torpedoes did not have proximity fuses. Come on! This blatant error is shown repeatedly during the film. The continuity is very poor. The dialog is laughable in places. In particular, official discourse during a WW-II war patrol just is not worded like that. Watch Das Boot or Run Silent, Run Deep to hear both official discourse and conversation in WW-II submarines. A U-boat skipper saying "I can't make this decision" in the heat of battle, or a U.S. chief of the boat saying "Hold your goddamn fire" is just silly. It's silly to have US subs facing German U-boats. It was not a factor in the war; I believe there was only a single instance of it. There is rich opportunity available for a treatment of what really was a factor in the war: US subs facing Japanese vessels.Summary: inconsistency is what you get here. The premise is not without interest, but the way it was handled would have better served an episode of The Twilight Zone. Maybe that's enough. That's why I gave it 5 stars instead of 1 or 2. I couldn't give it more, however, because the execution was simply too poor.
whatshisfacesoutpost I must agree with Sean and believe this is an excellent movie. I haven't seen the other version he mentioned, just the late version and it gives a look into what goes on in the minds of those at war as well as what they do. I recommend this movie to anyone who has a conscience and wonders what it is like in war. This movie is very realistic and authentic as to life aboard a sub. Having served four years in the US NAVY and serving in the Cuban crisis as well as Vietnam I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The acting is good and the movie has a good plot. If You have eve been in the service or just plain enjoy a good movie I believe that you will enjoy this movie. I don't normally write a review on movies and may never do it again for all that I know but this movie was good enough or me to do so.
Lasse Petersen This movie is running on Danish television as I write this. I watched about half of it, then I decided to abandon ship. Obvious factual errors (and I'm not even a sub-buff, although I have a general interest in military, warfare, and WW II), silly "dramatic" effects, like when Macy has a "vision" (?) of his wife aboard the German sub, the ridiculous concept of prisoners being kept chained and standing for three days, a chained prisoner with a breathing device which he spits out, etc, etc.I haven't seen much of Macy; he seems to be a competent actor, but what a waste...This movie s(t)inks. It really makes me regret I didn't buy the director's cut of Das Boot when I saw it at a fairly bargain price in a store just today. The comments here on IMDb were far more entertaining than the movie.
ParaGreen While there was some redeeming qualities to this movie, I don't think I would of ever bothered watching it if I knew beforehand how unrealistic it was. You'd think the producers have never seen a submarine movie in their lives. The technical adviser ought never to be allowed to work on a war movie again! Again and again and again there were these U boat or submarine torpedo shots being made were the the firing ship has no visual, no periscope view presumably on sound bearings and hitting other submerged submarines repeatedly and at various depths. This just didn't happen. Sound bearing shots could be made but only if either the other ship were large and slow, offering a broadside, or there was a huge amount of good luck for the firing sub.All though the movie you get the impression that German submarines were hardly ever surfaced. They hardly ever showed this and when they did I don't remember once where there were lookouts posted. That was the main idea. Look for the enemy. Finally at the end they portray an American Destroyer knocking out a SUBMERGED sub with five inch guns! This is absolutely absurd! This could not happen. The only time gunnery could be effective was against surfaced ships. U-boats under the surface were attacked with depth charges and only depth charges, unless the surface ship had hedgehogs or some variation of this system. And Hedgehogs were definitely NOT being portrayed here! I think the problem is mostly a lack of historical understanding mixed with an over weighting of creative license. Maybe they also just assumed that everyone else is going to be as uninformed as they are about the pertinent reality. They could of made this a lot better having these things righted. In fact with the mixed language format, and the actors involved and well as even just the CGI business, mixed with the interiors, this could have been a very good film.
