Imaginaerum tells the story of an elderly composer, Tom, who suffers from severe dementia. As he has had the disease for years and has regressed into childhood, he remembers practically nothing from his adult life. His music, friends, all his past including the memory of his daughter are a blur in his fragile mind. All he has left is the imagination of a ten year old boy. As he drifts away into coma, it seems impossible to get back what he has lost. Or is it?

ShangLuda Admirable film.
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Platypuschow Imaginaerum was a random pick & mix movie I went into knowing nothing and was immediatly struck by how good everything looked. This Finnish made title looks like a AAA Hollywood movie except here the rest of the quality matches.Otherwise known as the Nightwish movie as it was scored & soundtracked by the Finnish band, this is a dark fairytale that really took me by surprise. It tells the story of a man in his final hours living a bizzare fantasy in his head while his embittered daughter deals with his condition in her own way.It is a true visual treat that though very fragmented and not the easiest movie to follow does in fact have an outstanding payoff and all comes together in the end.Looking great, sounding fantastic and with a story that comes together this beautifully my one criticism was that I wanted it to continue for longer.A wonderful movie worthy of anyone and everyones attention. The Good:Visually stunningFantastic soundtrackDevastatingly well writtenThe Bad:Should have perhaps been longerCouple of weak moments that damage the flowThings I Learnt From This Movie:I should start listening to more Nightwish
lindarctica I see a lot of nay-sayers in the review section. Bear in mind: this movie was not made by hollywood, so don't expect one. It's the work-of-passion by a brillaint band, lead by the brilliant mind of Toumas Holopainen. With the small budget, time and space they had making this movie, I say they did one hell of a job.No, the characters aren't ''deep'' and the acting isn't oscar winning either, but if you are gonna whine about that you are missing the point of this movie,. Nightwish - great band as they are - tried to deliver a powerful message using creative imagery and delving into a realm of fantasy movie making that this world seriously lacks and needs more of! And they nailed it!The premisse is simple: A man called Thomas falls into coma after battling dementia for several years, and surpressed feelings about his neglecting father emerge, as well as feelings for the daugther who he as forgotten. Thing is: daughter left daddy to forget her all the same. (a topical subject that needs attention as it is). All of this comes to life in a very imaginitive, creativily outstanding dreamworld, that he uses to regain his memory and make amends with all that he has lost and forgotten in life. Laced in between is the -almost biographic, considering the sate of Nightwish themselves at the time - story of the band that fell apart, leaving scars in Thomas' mind. One would even think this movie is a portrayal of the personal fears of Tuomas Holopainen himself for that matter, considering the depression he fought with in the aftermath of all the bands turmoil over the years. I can say a lot more about it, but it comes down to this: forget for a moment that this was made by a band as an ''extended music video'' (it isn't, this IS a full, stand alone movie). and see them as suppliers of the wonderfull soundtrack supporting this heartwarming tale. Almost certain that people who even never heard of Nightwish but do appreciate an honest, small and endearing fantasy movie will enjoy this. In any case; go watch it!
Ruben Risso I've read a lot of fan-love and bitching about the movie. The thing is that I'm no movie expert, and I love it, 'cause the experts seem to think their subjectivity is really objective! The bad: Marianne Farley. Although the movie has little time to introduce the background story, she is keen on making it over-acted, poorly expressed. The good: Most people complain about the film being "a series of scenes that have nothing to do with the actual story". Well, there you have your first wrong, because the film needs to be watched with a creative eye rather than with a critic one. It's a story that invites you to assemble it, you have to really think about it, watch out for the references, mind the paths that make all these different promenades entwine. If few words, you have plenty of Hollywood to leave your brains at the door, not so with Imaginaerum, which complexity isn't just an excuse to present the soundtrack, but an invitation to an artist and a dreamer's mind, in which time and stories are build up with a different logic that in that one found in movies a hollywwodies.Nonetheless, the film has great effects for it's limited budget, it would have been great to give it another half an hour, just to let it stretch on its development.
Henrietta James This is a movie that falls far short of expectations. The premise is intriguing: an old man falls into a coma, during which he explores his own internal space in the persona of a young child. He's guided through this adventure by a character who's kind of a combination of Falcor and Jack Skellington. Danger lurks around every corner, and presumably his goal is to reach some sort of self-realization before he succumbs to his condition. The movie starts out with everything you'd expect from a psychological thriller, and the first few minutes are very promising. Then the band starts playing, and the movie reveals itself for what it is -- an extended music video promoting a semi-obscure European metal band.Yes, that's right. It's a music video. Maybe if I was a fan of the band Nightwish I would have been less disappointed. Unfortunately I'm not a fan, and the movie overall was a real letdown.
