Alicia I love this movie so much
GamerTab That was an excellent one.
ThrillMessage There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.
Kaelan Mccaffrey Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
Wuchak Released to 1987, "Hot Pursuit" is a youth misadventure/comedy starring John Cusack as a teen who is unable to go to the Caribbean with his girlfriend (Wendy Gazelle) & her family, but follows shortly thereafter, which leads to a string of misadventures. A youthful Ben Stiller and his dad are on hand as possible shady characters. Shelley Fabares plays the girlfriend's mother while Keith David plays an easy-going island dude. This is a likable teen comedy, but it seems thrown together. For instance, the protagonist's run-in with a trio of black islanders comes out of nowhere and leaves just as awkwardly with no tie-in to the main story. Still, if you like the cast and are in the mood for a teen comedy/island adventure it's worth checking out.For anyone who cares, the "island" sequences were all shot at Ixtapa, Guerrero, on the west coast of Mexico. So it's not even close to the Caribbean, but it's a passable substitute. The movie runs 93 minutes.GRADE: C
callanvass Laurie visits Danny, while Danny is studying for his chemistry test. Danny can't deal with the distractions and tells Laurie to leave him be. Laurie gets upset at the admonishment and leaves. This alters Danny's mood and he doesn't get much studying done. He fails his test the next day and Laurie has to leave without him. His professor has a change of heart and lets Danny leave after all. What ensues, is a hilarious string of misadventures, when Cusack gets taken on a wild good chase that seemingly never ends. This movie has a lot in common with another similar themed 80's film Cusack did in the 80's, The Sure Thing. It doesn't exactly replicate the formula, but it's in the same vein, just a different set-up.It strays away from the "Get the girl" formula. He is technically chasing a girl, but he already has her. The Sure Thing is much funnier, but this one is entertaining as well. This movie reinforced my opinion about how awesome the 80's were. Things weren't so prohibited back then, you could be much more creative. It has laughs, action, drama, what more could you possibly want? Most of the laughs stem from Cusack getting into wild adventures. The poor guy suffers so much bad luck that it's ridiculous, but it gave me some solid laughs. The Caribbean makes for a terrific setting as well, giving us some excellent photography and making the situations better. The finale becomes surprisingly violent and serious, but it was well done. John Cusack flourishes in this type of part. He's funny, likable, and sympathetic. How many of us have gone through hell and back to please a girl we love? I could easily empathize with that. Robert Loggia steals the show with his eccentric performance. I thought he was a hoot. Ben Stiller is wooden in an early role, but he wasn't famous like he is now. It was amusing to see him play a condescending prick. Even Ben's dad, Jerry has a role in this film. Wendy Gazelle is cute as a button, made for a good love interest for Cusack. She's one of those cute broad's from the 80's that disappeared after a while. What a shame. Overall, I enjoyed this movie. It's not as good as The Sure Thing, or Better Off Dead. But it is a perfect example of how you can let your brain relax for 90 minutes or so and be entertained. 7.2/10
DICK STEEL After a hiatus of weeks, I'm back with scouring the library for more John Cusack movies. Hot Pursuit is one of his earliest movies, even earlier than the previously reviewed Say Anything. Here, he plays a teenager whose Chemistry exam stands in the way of spending a Caribbean holiday with his girlfriend and her family. However, his professor turns a blind eye to his flunking of the exam and the need for remedial lessons, and Cusack has to pursue his girl and her family as they had already set off without him. It's a decent comedy as he gets into situations like missing planes, spending the night with ganja-smoking Caribbeans, getting entangled with a pirate of sorts, and so on. And it all boils down to his ability to be able to save his girl and her family when they become victims of some thugs who take over their yacht.Fans of Ben Stiller would also want to watch this for one of Stiller's early performances on screen, and a villain at that. He doesn't have much lines, and neither are they funny though.Like most teen romance comedies of the 80s, it's pretty predictable stuff, and plays like a teenage boy's fantasy of how a holiday could probably turn out, and becoming the hero who saves the day. Suitable for those boring weekends which you want to waste away.Barebones Code 1 DVD containing no extras.
Pepper Anne Hot Pursuit is a mildly funny comedy which is likely to draw interest from audiences searching for John Cusak movies. Dan Bartlett (Cusak) is supposed to go on vacation with his girlfriend. Lori Cronenberg. to the Islands. But, he has to bail at the last minute after flunking his Chemistry exam and his girlfriend leaves without him. A generous Chemistry teacher helps him out though, and Danny is once again able to go. But, what a surprise (not), he misses his flight and opportunity to join Lori and her family for a vacation on the beaces. Thus begins one misfortune after another as Danny spends his vacation moving from one place to the next to reach his girlfriend. Each time, something stops him from getting where he has to go. The plot is predictable (the procedure), though sometimes what the situation brings is not (the substance). But Danny is persistent, even if growing ever more tired of all the ungodly obstacles that seem to pop up just as he arrives.Meanwhile, the boat that Lori and her family is traveling on along the coast is being navigated by a murderer, who eventually gets the Cronerbergs involved in his plot. Danny not only must reach his girlfriend, but save the Cronerbergs from the madmen before it's too late, delivering an ending which at times wavers from being too over the top (Danny's plan of escape involves nothing more than a jeep ride and some grenades). Sometimes, the climax doesn't seem enough (the explosions of the grenades look like someone threw a sandbag at a tree). I think John Cusak fans will nonetheless enjoy the movie as he delivers typtical and youthful Cusak insanity present in his early films, even the ones with the most stupid plots. Even so, there are some funny moments in the movie from other characters, especially Kieth David as one of the Jamacians who gives Danny a lift. And Robert Loggia as Mac, who commands the boat that Danny hithces on.
