classicsoncall I only watched this film once, and I'm not inclined to watch it again because it's so dark and gritty, but I'll tell you what - it's so expertly plotted and written, I don't think you'd be able to spot a flaw or loose end in the film anywhere. Part caper flick and part prison movie, it's an unusual tale that involves two million bucks in stolen loot, a liver transplant, and an outlaw who matches wits with a slew of Mexican gangsters who'll take each other out if they have to in order to get their hands on the cash. One thing is certain, you'll never find a prison anywhere else in the world like 'El Pueblito'. It's run like a small city by a drug kingpin, with family allowed inside if their jailed member has the means to support them. There's a concept I never thought about. When a nameless outlaw otherwise known as The Driver (Mel Gibson) shows up following a joint U.S./Mexican authority vehicle chase, he takes his time sizing up the joint, and eventually hatches a plan to get his two mil back, while watching the back of a ten year old boy (Kevin Hernandez) he's befriended along with his prostitute mother (Dolores Heredia). The story does have it's twists and turns, and if your attention strays you might get lost, so keep your eye on the ball with this picture. Those of faint heart or weak stomach might be advised of the graphic liver operation, which might be more squeamish than some of the shootouts that occur. But the topper has to do with the way Gibson's Driver puts it over on the bad guys by being even more of a bad guy. The way he set up the American shipbuilder was a blast all by itself, but the best jaw dropping moment for me occurred when poor old Reginald T. Barnes answered the knock on his door and had no way of realizing what was about to happen. That was a twist I'm sure no one saw coming.
oulamies Let's face it, Mel Gibson is a king in playing anti-heroes. Drawing power from his past of memorable performances, most notably the Mad Max ones, Mel handles his roles with a talent of a veteran. He's roles are dark and fun, especially the role of Driver in "Get The Gringo". This movie does pretty much everything right. It has an interesting Mexican prison setting, unpredictable plot, mostly good characters, and a perfect harmony between dark humour and violent action. I'm actually gonna go ahead and call this movie smart. You'll understand by the Clint Eastwood scene. On top of prison, action and comedy elements, I get a lot of western vibes from this. There's a really cool gunfight with revolvers, and the overall dusty atmosphere creates a strict modern western feel to the movie, and this is awesome.Everything was directed well too. No clichéd scenes (okay, maybe the bonding with the boy was obvious) or the typical Hollywood morality lessons in the end. Overall a very nice, dark and fun film starring the great Mel Gibson.
Ole Sandbaek Joergensen A very clever film or a clever setup I might say, this is good old Mel Gibson back for more. The film has a good story, great narrative, impressive action, nice filming and good directing. Maybe in the film the odds are against him, but watching this he certainly has something good going for him, it is almost like seeing the good old action movies of his, like Payback or even the humor and action ones, like Lethal Weapon.I think this film works out very well, it is entertaining and interesting all of the way, a great film for the guys :) You should see it if you haven't and especially if you like Mel Gibsons action movies.
shaws35 All the reviews I read about this movie were amazing. People rant and rave about it, but I don't get it. The storyline is nothing new it was just the typical bland action film to me. The premise where an American gets thrown into a foreign jail has been done before, and done better. Maybe I'm missing the point... Was it supposed to be a comedy? I was bored honestly...I thought Mel Gibson's character was cheesy and the fight scene where he was throwing bombs made me laugh. It was totally predictable and unrealistic.. Usually I come on here and trust the reviews but I have to say I totally disagree on this one, I turned it off half way through.
