Bluebell Alcock Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Kaelan Mccaffrey Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
TheBlueHairedLawyer Felidae is a 1994 animated film from Germany featuring cats as the characters, save for three or four minor human roles. According to the author, it is an allegory for Germany's Nazi past, a thrilling and compelling story of a cult of cats, with one cat secretly ruling above the rest in the neighborhood, trying to create the perfect breed of cat while following his deceased owner's cruel vivisection experiments.Francis is the new cat in town; his overweight and slobby owner Gus has moved to cure his writer's block. While exploring, Francis comes face-to-face with a murdered cat in the backyard and also meets the cranky, deformed and crude-speaking cat Bluebeard (Blaubart in German). They quickly become companions although Bluebeard won't admit he likes Francis. Francis is plagued with nightmares of a man in a lab coat and the next morning he learns more about the strange murders. He also accidentally disturbs the cat cult taking place in the attic where cats suicidally leap into an electric current. The cult chases him down and he hides at the house of a blind female Cat, Felicity. After meeting a cat good with computers as well he returns to talk to Felicity but her head has been ripped off.One day Francis discovers that his new home used to be a science lab years back, trying to find a tissue-bonding glue for hospitals. As funding was repeatedly cut back the head of the project became an alcoholic, spiraling into madness and killing lab cats just for fun. One of the scientists, Ziebold, thinks the cat experiments are cruel and he quits, leaving the mad professor alone. The professor is murdered that night by an unknown assassin. The next day Francis and Bluebeard discover a cavern under a garden and find it full of thousands of cat skeletons. The one living cat there is old and disfigured, having been part of the lab experiments and escaping himself. He tells them that mother cats with kittens, disfigured or ill cats, any cat not the neighborhood's ideal 'perfect breed' is murdered and chucked down to the cavern. Soon the cats uncover the cult's strange plot to fill the neighborhood with golden-furred blue-eyed cats, and find the cat behind it all.Felidae is an excellent movie. A lot of reviewers have said it was scary and inappropriate for kids, but I think it is forgotten that not every animated film is for kids. And contrary to some beliefs, this movie is not to raise awareness of animal testing. The animal testing was in the movie because during the Holocaust Nazis did horrible experiments on people. This film is not really about cats, it is only portrayed by them. To fully understand the messages behind the cat storyline it's good to read the book first. The soundtrack was great, if not really creepy. The cats, especially the eyes, were drawn really well and the animation was smooth. The one thing I didn't like was that it should have explained more details from the book, it would have made it much less confusing. I saw the movie first and had no idea what was going on until I bought the book and did some research on the plot. Other than that, Felidae remains thrilling and a great mystery all the way through.
azbrewer03 I came across "Felidae" when my friend and I were surfing the internet for dark and creepy animated films. Beings Americans, we were not familiar with this animated film from Germany. I wanted to take a look at it, but my friend didn't want to, saying it "looked boring and stupid." I made a deal with her: watch it when we got home, and tell each other what we thought the next day. So I got home and looked up Felidae on YouTube, luckily finding an English dub. I must say, I was shocked. When they said dark, they meant DARK. I couldn't believe it- blood, guts, profanity, and even a cat mating scene! I had just watched a murder mystery with cats! Aside from all the gross stuff, I have to say that I am impressed. The story is well written, the characters are 3- dimensional, and the animation is quite good. When I found my friend the next day, I asked her, "Did you like it?" She replied, "I couldn't get past the blind cat getting decapitated." As you can see, this film is NOT for the faint of heart and NOT for children, but it is a treat for adults, especially if you are a murder mystery fan. Go check it out, it's worth the watch!
Alex Tomlin As an animation fan, it's always good to seek out those that may have slipped through the net. In relation to what animation actually comes out in Uk cinemas, the numbers are most definitely poor compared to the cinema's in Europe and Asia - spending time in France allowed me to see many ore animated films, of which many were fantastic, only to have them never aired in the UK.Felidae is an example. First off, it's age of release makes it an unlikely purchase at the DVD store, but it's an interesting and ambitious example of 2d animation from Germany that deserves recognition. Up there with Watership Down and Plague Dogs, Felidae is a ghoulishly gory tale of murder amongst a cast of cats. The animation is good, the concept well rounded and the general narrative an interesting one. However the vivisection sequences and violence may leave some audiences upset and scratching their heads. Felidae is not a children's film, and contains a rather novel sex scene that left me a little surprised - the character designs seem to suggest a younger target audience then the narrative allows. Aside from the gore, I doubt children would be able to follow the story without being frightened. I strongly recommend that the film is seen in German with subtitles as well, as the lip syncing is an impressive achievement, somewhat cheapened by the rather poor English dubbing. Overall the film is an impressive achievement, though in my opinion, over ambitious. It tries hard to develop adult ideas but fails to balance them with characters that you empathise with. The dream sequences are expertly achieved and an example of fantastic art but some of the character designs left me underwhelmed.Credit where credit is due, Felidae tries hard to be dark and different and deserves a look.
Frisky_Kitty2025 Felidae's tag line is "Der Katzenthriller," I think it means "Cat Thriller," and that is a perfect description of this dark animated movie. It is a trilling tale of a cat new to the neighborhood who is determined to solve the string of gruesome murders against the neighboring cats. There were some good twists in this movie, and until the final climax, I was kept guessing as to who the murderer was.Felidae is also NOT for children. There is a lot of extremely graphic violence, that even me as a 25-year-old was shocked to see. In spite of that, I really enjoyed this movie. I love cats, and I love dark animated movies like Watership Down and Plague Dogs. I'm not sure if anyone else who does not appreciate those things would enjoy this movie.Never the less, I stand by Felidae and consider it to be one of the greatest animated movies for adults. In fact, if you're only going to see ONE animated cat murder mystery movie, it should be Felidea.
