Reviews

MamaGravity good back-story, and good acting
Stevecorp Don't listen to the negative reviews
Brenda The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
Raymond Sierra The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
dreamy noneofyourbusiness The first half of the film is mostly beautiful, enjoyably naff erotica, with a great 70s soundtrack; as the titular character explores the sensual advantages of her open marriage (save for an uncomfortable interlude with two voyeuristic houseworkers who don't seem to be having entirely consensual sex...). But the second half of the film, in which Emmanuelle is pressured into taking sexual "education" from a controlling older man, who man-handles her into situations she is uncomfortable with, gives her away as a prize and eventually has her raped, is sinister to say the least. Particularly because it's clear that the film makers feel these scenarios are acceptable and presumably even a turn-on? For me, this was just disturbing, and negated any previous erotic enjoyment. I hope this serves as a helpful warning to others, as I could have done with one!
TxMike This genre of movie escaped me as I was firmly entrenched in my career in the 1970s. It was one of those movies I had heard about, with a "forbidden" theme, but never saw. Then I happened to discover it on Netflix streaming movies, so I gave it a look.Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel, who was about 21 during filming, is Emmanuelle. Living in Paris, she then is summoned to Asia to be with her older husband. There she encounters things she had no way of knowing about.Young women undressing and masturbating in front of her, without shock or shame, just as a normal activity. Women friends soliciting her for lesbian affairs. Other men casually asking her to hook up with them. Her husband watching as the winner of a fighting match has sex with Emmanuelle.Perhaps this film was made for a serious purpose, to tell an interesting story, but it comes off as just a film of erotic content just for the eroticism. Still it is somewhat tame by current 21st century standards.
michellelocke007 caught this movie on my late night cable network and settled in to watch one of the great erotic masterpieces of the early seventies by erotic auteur just juecken of Gwendoline and the histoire of o fame. i did enjoy the lovely and lush scenery, theme song and exotic locales but found the pace rather slow moving for my taste. i though that Sylvia Kristel who plays the iconic role was just perfect and certainly didn't shy away from the nudity. the only part of the movie that intrigued and piqued my interest was when Kristel character met up with and began an affair with Marika green's character. immediately Kristel is fascinated by green and invites herself to tag along for the trip. you see the the two as they travel along and work side by side doing their daily chores. the way that Kristel absolutely adores and fawns over green. its' a shame that the writers didn't continue this storyline as it would have been interesting to see how it would have all played out. this one role catapulted a than un-known Kristel into super-stardom and se would go on to star in several sequels in the emmanuelle series much of it forgettable. she could not launch her career in America and what roles she did receive were usually stereotyped sexpot ones such as private lessons, Mata hair and lady chatterly's lover. it must have proved frustrating for Kristel who clearly wanted to move on from her one role. a decent flick if you're looking for something to watch on a Friday evening with a lot of skin.
Falconeer Although not quite as good as it's sequel, "Emmanuelle: Joys of A Woman," this film made Dutch actress/model Sylvia Kristel an international star, and changed the way sex was presented in mainstream film forever after. Filmed in exotic Thailand, this is the engaging story of a beautiful young woman's sexual awakening, (or sexual corruption, depending on how you look at it.) Emmanuelle is the 19 year old wife of a wealthy diplomat, a man older than her, and with much more worldly experience than his innocent young bride. Jean is proud to claim that Emmanuelle is not his possession, and that he would like nothing more than for her to be free to explore her own sexuality. However when Emmanuelle falls in love and runs off with a female friend, her husband doesn't deal with it as well as he thought. Emmanuelle, played by the exquisite Sylvia Kristel, is surrounded by people eager to teach her all about eroticism and sensuality. There are the bored, jet set wives who spend their days lounging by the pool in tiny swimsuits and gigantic 70's sunglasses. There is the young girl, Marie-Ange, forever sucking lolli-pops, who teaches Emmanuelle not to be ashamed of masturbation, (in a very hot scene,). There is the bitchy Arianne, forever trying to seduce the younger Emmanuelle. And finally there is the older man, Mario, who is the catalyst, the man who "breaks" Emmanuelle, through a series of sometimes disturbing sexual games, re-inventing her into the sexually liberated woman that we see in the numerous sequels. And for those only familiar with the sequels, this is an important one to see, as this is where Emmanuelle comes into being. It is quite fascinating to watch this character develop from a wide eyed innocent, into a free-thinking sexual being, a woman not afraid to enjoy what men have enjoyed since the dawn of time. The erotic scenes are tasteful, and never go beyond soft-core. "Emmanuelle" is an erotic film with a lot of class and style. There is a particular scene which has been cut from many new DVD releases; a violent rape scene in an opium den. The scene is important, as it is a pivotal scene in Emmanuelle's "education." It is the scene that breaks her, and makes her realize that sex is not something to be feared. In the scene directly following that rape, she is brought to a Thai boxing match, where her body is the prize for the winning fighter. This sexual encounter could have been a rape also, but because she is not afraid, there is no rape, just a consensual act that she derives great pleasure from. Classic 70's theme, more controversial today than it was then. This is a must for fans of cult and erotic films. And if you enjoy this, seek out "Emmanuelle 2;" it's even better!
