JinRoz For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!
ChicRawIdol A brilliant film that helped define a genre
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Haven Kaycee It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
bayardhiler I have to be honest, I really wasn't expecting much when I hit the play button for 1994's "Death Machine". At the very least I thought it might be good for a few unintentional laughs like many direct-to-video films are. But what I got instead was actually a pretty entertaining and thrilling sci-fi gem. The story takes place sometime in the distance future, where a corrupt weapons corporation has come under fire for the deaths of several people when one of its killer robots malfunctions and goes rouge. As a result, a new CEO by the name of Hayden Cale (the beautiful Ely Pouget from 1991's revival of "Dark Shadows") is brought in to clean things up. But she soon gets more than she bargained for when she crosses swords with the person who really calls the shots, eccentric and psychotic weapons designer Jack Dante (played by the voice of Chucky himself, Brad Dourif). Once he realizes his power is being threatened, Jack does what any twisted weapon designer would do: Build and unleash the ultimate killing machine on the corporate executives! Things only get more interesting when a group of peace activists break into to destroy the headquarters only to get sucked into the nightmare instead. From there it's a battle of survival as our friends navigate through a treacherous high rise building with the death machine hot on their trail. It all might sound a bit cheesy and truth be told it is. However it is the good type of cheesiness, the kind that is charming and can only happen when the right combination happens. A big part of that combination is the actors involved. Clearly this is not the most Oscar worthy plot ever written, but that doesn't stop everyone involved from giving everything they got to their roles, especially Brad Dourif. With his constant on screen charisma, he is able to breath life into a character that is both insane and yet fascinating as he plots murder and plays with his toys. Ely Pouget plays the strong female character with great relish as she struggles to overcome the situation she's in. One should also congratulate the actors who play the peace activists, John Sharian and Martin McDougall, since we come to actually care about them. And of course, what good would a movie about an ultimate killing machine be if it didn't include a good kick-ass machine to go with it and man do we get it here. I don't won't to reveal too much about it since that would spoil the surprise. All I'll say is that in a genre that has seen more than its share of killing machines, the filmmakers here manage to create something unique, cool, and from your worst nightmare to boot! Plus the movie has good, crisp direction from director Stephen Norrington. Plus, there is that intangible movie magic at work here that only makes things all the more better. So if any of this sounds to your liking, give "Death Machine" a try; if your someone who likes cheesy but good flicks, you won't regret it.
mitchell5954 Death machine is a science fiction film that came out in 1994. The movie takes place in 2023 in a cyberpunk type future that Blade Runner paved the way for.The story follows Hayden Cale, played by Ely Pouget, who is the CEO of Chaank Industries. Chaank Industries is secretly developing a death machine that can track its victims through fear. The creator of the machine is Jack Dante played by Brad Dourif. Hayden finds this out and tries to stop Dante, but he releases the machine to kill her and a group of stragglers. Together, they must destroy the creature and bring the secret to light.Overall I thought the film was okay, but there are a lot of problems with it. Firstly most of the characters I thought were very bland. The lead girl, Hayden, tries to be the Ripley of this film, but I do not think she pulls it off. I found her to be uninteresting as a character. The same with the other main characters. I was not invested in their characters, so I did not care if they lived or died. The one character I thought was a lot of fun is Brad Dourif's character Dante. He is so over-the-top that I just found him very enjoyable to watch. The acting is a mixed bag. The main cast did okay, but the supporting cast was horrible. For example, there was this random cop that appeared periodically in the film. The guy that played the cop is a terrible actor. He did not deliver one line naturally. Brad Dourif was the most over-the-top in the film acting wise. However, again he is so goofy that it is hard not to enjoy him. Dourif is easily one of the best aspects about this film. The effects are meh, in my opinion. The wide shot of the city looked good. The style reminded me a lot of Blade Runner. However, many of the other effects looked off. For example, the effects of the death machine when it is moving are laughable. The design of the machine itself is also very lackluster, in my opinion. Many elements of this film remind me of other Sci-Fi films like Blade Runner, Terminator, Alien, etc. However, those elements just made me think about how much better those movies are and how those elements are handled better in those films.Overall this is an okay film, but there are many better Sci-Fi films out there. If you are a fan of Bred Dourif, then I'd say give this a look.
Zbigniew_Krycsiwiki Attractive but dim exec (Ely Pouget) has to fight against a fruitcake mad scientist/ computer genius (Brad Dourif) who has just built "death machine", a nine-foot-tall, fanged robotic creature which senses fear, and goes chomping through the high tech HQ after its creator is fired. A trio of cyberpunk computer hackers breaks into the building the same night "death machine" is unleashed, and end up running for their lives and fighting it also, and also to give the film a higher body count and a couple more plot complications.Robotic "death machine" creature looks effective, and its fall from the side of the building was done fairly well, but it takes too long for it to be introduced into the plot, and after it is,it disappears for too much time to really keep the momentum going all the way through, which keeps this cyberpunk slasher from being as much fun as it might have been. As it is, this ends up constantly veering from "so-bad-it's-good" to lame Die Hard ripoff. And speaking of lame, about that ending.....**1/2 out of ****
jjrad I can't stop my self from commenting on this masterpiece. It is literally the best movie I have ever seen and will probably be my favorite for the rest of my life. Brad Dourif is my favorite actor I saw him in alien 4 and lord of the rings not knowing who he was, then a friend told me to watch child's play. I saw him again so I couldn't stop myself from finding out who he was, I saw at least 5 music videos on you tube about this movie which made me order it. Now I have more than 50 of his films and will keep collecting until all of them sit in my basement with my movies. Highly recommended if you like the cheesy scifi or horror movies, like Hardware, although I did not like hardware because dogs died in it. It is being sold very cheap on amazon and is worth $789,675 to me. Although I bought it for less than ten dollars.
