Three 40-something women in a small English town meet weekly for a ritual of gin, cigarettes, and sweets -- and swapped stories arguing which of them has the most pathetic love life. Kate is headmistress at the local school; her best friends are the town's police chief and a cynical, thrice-divorced doctor.

VeteranLight I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Bob This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Logan By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Sally Warner I loved the movie. Beautifully shot with wonderful scenery in great British understatement that resorts to American overdone drama a couple of times. However mostly an engrossing and very English story with a great mix of pathos and stand back watching.I love the wonderful English houses, churches and a crematorium add to the scenery. Who would have thought funerals could be so much fun.A good story with the young male lead portrayed as a functioning adult with wistful teenage angst. Some great hard-hitting one-liners as an English movie at its best should be and a couple of interesting twists.Remember your tissues:-)
rfratto I watched this film last night for the first time. It was airing on one of the HBO Channels. To be honest I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't sure at first where they were going with it as the movie progressed I became more and more interested. Thinking at first if this were an older man younger woman scenario, no one would care. I also wasn't sure about Jed's character and what his motives were as well. I like Kate's (Andie MacDowell) friends did not want to see her get hurt and yet being older myself I understood. BUT friends can be sometimes dangerous especially one who masks envy for concern.Once I realized that however young HOT Jed was he was sincere and I believe truly fell in love with Kate, making the outcome even more tragic. On a lighter note one aspect of his character that I found sexy is when he would take the gum out of his mouth before making love to Kate. It was sexy at best! I liked Andie M. in this due to the fact that her character was someone I could relate too. The romantic who I gather had not experienced real romance up until meeting Jed (Kenny Doughty). When she would smile thinking of him in the most inopportune places I thought yes indeed I know that feeling. This is not a great movie but it is a good one and refreshingly what it feels like for older women trying to find love and having a movie in this era portray that.
oleg_lenski The first word which comes into my mind after watching this movie is "beauty". Beauty is all around, in actors' play (Andie is superb as always), in well designed shots, and in authors' red line idea - the Love.I think the Kenny's character is the only white spot in these three womens' otherwise boring and predictable life. His interaction makes Andie's character living as entertaining as it could possibly be. When he's gone, it became obvious that we cannot really appreciate and hold to our inner believes and sacred desires. The fact that Andie successfully recovers from this loss is nothing bad, instead it shows that life prevails in any forms, even in this small British village, which is shown perfectly.Another reason I love this movie is that it is so British in all ways - all that houses and "fags" and accents :))). And Andie again is doing superb job! It is a shame that this movie got such low marks. 10 out of ten!
jebishop-1 I saw only one comment how an American could be headmistress of a prestigious English school. A good point. Another would be - how would they allow her to stay at the school pregnant, with no husband? Not likely! Kate's friends were hateful, Molly particularly, and in reality, could they be forgiven? Is it possible the scene between Molly and Jed was the future? If Jed had been shown with more depth of character, he might have been more believable as Kate's future. Perhaps, that is why she was having qualms about the pending marriage.A series of events with good music, photography; some amusing scenes, some reasonable dialog. But all in all, it went astray more than once i. e. the wedding and abduction; the "I'm sorry" from Molly, the silly ending among others. Too bad as there were all sorts of possibilities for a better movie.
