JohnnyLee1 Flynn is absolutely charismatic in the title role. Never realised how dominating his physical presence is as well as his captivating personality! He just relishes the role. What a great James Bond he would have made 25 years or so later. Olivia de Havilland later fought the studio that forced her to play limiting roles like the one she plays here but she is wonderful with Flynn. Director Curtiz puts it all together excitingly, hardly slowing the pace. His lighting of night scenes is particularly memorable.
Takeshi-K Captain Blood made a star out of Errol Flynn, its also fair to say he made a star out of Captain Blood.Flynn plays English doctor Peter Blood, a decent man sentenced to slavery in the outer colonies for the ridiculous crime of healing a man, whose loyalty was to Britain's enemies. Flynn's death stare in reply to the sentence, is one of the great close ups in cinema history. Its also a sign of things to come, because Blood goes on an epic rampage to wreak revenge, while simultaneously maintaining his strong sense of fairness. It's truly one of the great characters in film and Flynn embodies it with rapier like precision. I'm a huge fan of Michael Curtiz (director of Casablanca). As the story goes, He and MGM wanted an unavailable Robert Donat (39 Steps) and so took a chance on an inexperienced but plucky Aussie larrikan from Tasmania instead. Curtiz ordered that he take fencing lessons and filmed them. The resulting footage convinced MGM they had their man.Olivia de Havilland (who would return to Flynn's side for the legendary action adventure film, The Adventures of Robin Hood) plays his love interest. The chemistry was so stunning, it made them huge stars and led to them making seven more films together. De Havilland's sweetness plays well with Flynn's roguish charms.
matttaylor-65065 This is just a fantastic pirate film. In fact to be honest its just a fantastic film altogether! Something about the film is just as good today as it was when it was made! 80 years ago! Has it really been 80 years! This was like Robin Hood of the sea kind of film. The film is like justice over law, robbing the rich and giving to the poor kind of idea. Flynn is a Doctor who found himself on the wrong side of one of the United Kingdom's many civil wars, he was sent away to be a slave in one of the outer colonies, you only need to just see the way he stares at the judge! It says everything you need to know right their! He didn't choose to become an outlaw and he just does what he needs to in order to survive (maybe get a little revenge).
jarrodmcdonald-1 Captain Blood is the film by which all other Errol Flynn adventure pictures should be judged. Our dashing hero is very unassuming in this effort and his charm counter-balances the feisty temperament of leading lady Olivia de Havilland. But as much as one enjoys the bickering and the attraction shared by these two, it is the rivalry between Flynn's character and his ally-turned-foe, played by Basil Rathbone, which gives the film much of its dramatic impetus. The duel scene along the shore that the men wage for the honor of Miss Havilland presents some of the finest, most precisely staged fencing around. After the convenient demise of Rathbone's character, the captain and his men have some great fighting scenes against enemy ships near the island of Jamaica. These maritime battles are mounted on a lavish Hollywood sound stage, but the authenticity of the sets is so real you would not know the difference.
