Reviews

Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
AnhartLinkin This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
FirstWitch A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Neive Bellamy Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
BA_Harrison Fred Vogel's original August Underground was a totally repulsive, yet very convincing piece of fake snuff that worked well due to the fine performances from the leads, the authentic camera-work, and the ultra-realistic gore. For their follow up movie, August Underground's Mordum, ToeTag Pictures have increased the level of sickness, depravity and violence, but in doing so, have lessened its effectiveness as pseudo-snuff. What happens in Mordum is so OTT and grotesque, that it no longer seems real. Despite being a wall-to-wall catalogue of violence, the result is a pretty tedious film (there's just TOO MUCH screaming and swearing) which ultimately lacks the visceral impact and shock value of its predecessor.Although not a great film, Mordum will nevertheless find an audience amongst gore-hounds and fans of extreme cinema thanks to some fine stomach-churning effects and a few very sick taboo-busting scenes: a man is forced to emasculate himself with a pair of scissors; a woman makes herself vomit over her two screaming victims (who not once put up any resistance); a man guts a woman, then drops his trousers and proceeds to have a go at the dead woman's abdominal cavity; and then there's the notorious bath scene which takes sexual deviancy on film to a new (low) level—Hell, I don't even want to describe what happens here!!I'm going to be generous and award Mordum 4 out of 10 for its sheer audacity and willingness to go the extra mile to offend, but to be honest I found it quite tiresome; it really should've been so much better.
Chelseaa Benwell In a nut shell, as I've seen many others' say in their reviews of this movie, it's a fake snuff film. Not the kind that tried to be clever or even slightly entertaining, however. Essentially, the whole movie uses shock tactic after shock tactic to lure you into thinking either, "some people will do anything for a bit of cash" or "why even bother?" You'll be given rape, murder, vomit, blood, degradation and much more but unfortunately, not a plot line. You are following a few sick people around with a shaky camera and little to no talent. I can see why some people find it difficult to watch, because it's just god awful. I'm one to give any kind of horror a go at watching, and I did watch the entirety of August Underground's Mordum, but I came out of it feeling slightly unfulfilled and horribly embarrassed. I get that there is a market for these kind of movies, and I'm not going to judge those who enjoy them. But I seriously think there are so many flaws here that could have easily been prevented simply by the actors themselves being a little more believable. I suppose I give props to the SFX, but aside from that I just felt I was watching an amateur submission for an indie gore movie competition. Good on them for making a movie recognised for being one of the sickest films ever made but come on, guys... Even A Serbian Film had a plot (albeit a good budget, too.)If you want to give this movie a go for yourself, honestly, go ahead. Just don't expect anything with value or any kind of entertainment knowledge. Also, be prepared for the final scene with the dead 5 year old as it sets this movie up as "yeah, these people will literally do anything for money."
Michael Blackpaw I feel that I need to take off my hat to this film, because it is extremely artistic, well executed, and clearly does exactly what the director would have wanted the film to be. However, as a consequence, it is not a wildly entertaining film, and it begins to lose it's iconic aggression as the film develops. There is no real plot that you need to know about with "Mordum", because the film basically hasn't got one. All the film does is it follows the lives of serial killers, who feel the need to carry out violent torture scenes to fulfill their fantasies. Since this is in fact a simulated snuff film, it does make sense that there is no plot at all. But that doesn't forgive the pathetic second half of the film. The first half or so of the film is an assault on the senses, as your ears are filled with the screams of victims, and the disturbing comments from the killers, while your eyes are forced to put up with scenes including self-castration and sexual assault. The film quality is low and grainy, which gives the film an arty touch, while the violent executions are worryingly realistic. I must admit I was quite disturbed by many of the scenes, and will stay with me for a very long time. The main problem with the film though is it's rather laughable second half. Whether it was designed to give the audience a break from the repeated face-beating they received from the first half or not, it turned from a horror into a comedy as it began trying to show that serial killers have a social life. I believe this may have been to suggest that anyone could be a serial killer, but despite that the execution didn't make it seem like that. The final execution that followed the social life element didn't make up for it either, being disappointed when compared to other scenes, which didn't lend it a hand either. While I am not a fan of the torture porn genre, I did find this film very impressive artistically. Unfortunately, the film dropped in standard just after the halfway mark, which ruined the effect the film had on me. If the film had had more of a story, or had been less silly towards the end, I may have enjoyed it enough to want to buy it on DVD from the States. But it hasn't. So I won't...
CyMaddux Well, about what you would expect I guess. There isn't much of a storyline here at all. You are going to get your sick crap and plenty of it. Not really much outside of torture, bondage rape kinda stuff. There isn't any plot and there is a lot of yelling throughout the whole movie. Lots of rape, violent torture stuff, just tries to be sick, but it's pretty fake to me. I guess for a low budget the effects probably aren't that bad. I guess some people might like this kind of stuff, but I am not one. I have it a 2 just due to the lead actress, she can act for sure.
