Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Pepper Anne Airborne is a fun movie for teenagers. Shane McDermott is Mitchell Goosen, a hot young Californian surfer. His parents are leaving for Australia for a few months. But instead of taking him along, they send him to ice cold Ohio to live with his Uncle Lewis, Aunt Irene, and his cousin Wiley (Seth Green). Poor Mitchell is alienated in his new environment as people shun his pacifist surfer outlook. While he's charming to the girls, the gang of steroid-pumped high school hockey players he runs into hate him, and they try all they can to give Mitchell a hard time and make his visit in Ohio as difficult as he can. Mitchell has to find a way to adjust, but that's pretty hard to do when you're dating your adversary's sister in that old fashioned Romeo and Juliet cliche. Mitchell's only peace offering is his ability to rollerblade, which will come in handy during some finale competitions in which the guys all get their opportunity to bond. The story is kind of stupid and hard to believe knowing that some of the high school guys are played by actors like Jack Black and Chris Conrad who are long past teen years. But, Shane McDermott and Seth Green both offer a few good laughs, nonetheless. However, the beauty in this movie is indeed the skating scenes, particularly the five-minute downhill race along Devil's Spine. It is a fantastic sequence, especially if you like skating movies. It's just a nice grunge days movie about rollerblading.
fahrmeier Forget the fact that this movie is your typical 1990's pre-teen romantic comedy, forget the fact that the movie is dull and really has no plot. The real problem is the movie doesn't make much geographic sense. This picture makes Cincinnati appear as if it is Winnepeg. Yes, Cincinnati has 2 hockey teams (one at the time this movie was made), however I would not consider it a hockey town where kids play hockey during their free time. Perhaps the reason there only seems to be two teams who ever play hockey during the movie is because they are the only 10 kids in the city who do play it.Further more, the choice of Edie McClure as the aunt was annoying. I loved her as Grace the secretary in Ferris Beuller, however she is known for her distinctive Minnesotan Accent....Minnesotan, not Ohioan. It's like having a movie that takes place in North Carolina and Joe Pesci doing his Goodfellas schtick.Lastly, during the final climactic race scene, the kids take roads in the city that do not interconnect and actually end up on opposite sides of this 20 something mile wide city in a matter of seconds, and even end up in Kentucky without going across one bridge. These problems probably wouldn't bother the normal viewer (the other 1000 holes will do that just fine.) However anyone who has spent any signicant time in Cincinnati will be left scratching their heads asking themselves "How the heck did they end up there?"
Gander83 "The French Connection of Rollerblade Chases", a quote that may attract a wondering teenage eye to the front cover in the video store, hopefully the shop will be closing and they may reside to taking this to the counter. I would then hope they had the same experience I did. From perfectly selected music to skating scenes to make exercise look more than just burning calories, this film couldn't be more perfect. The protagonist Mitchell Goosen, woke up from a Californian Dream to find his self in the Winters of Cincinnati, with no use for a surf board other than as an ironing board. Mitchell's Zen like attitudes aren't favoured at the local school and it's not until he puts on a pair on Rollerblades is it you see the power in his stride. Not forgetting the appearances from a young Jack Black and Seth Green, the story moves the watcher with the a light hearted portrayal into teenage romance and angst. Five Star
p-hutchins Good triumphs over evil, boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl and great inline skating stunts. This movie has been making the rounds on Cable TV and is suitable for the whole family. For those of you who've never been to Cincinnati, the hills there are monstrous, crazier than San Francisco and the streets more like Boston. There are several young actors whose careers have taken off since ( Seth Green, Alanna Ubach, Jack Black, Jacob Vargas e.g.), the plot is fine theater, the sound track is very good and the whole thing is fun. I've seen it several times and my son, the skater, agrees that the street skating, done by team RollerBlade, is still on top. Even a bit of Zen philosophy: "You don't have to fight the Shark to fight for the Wave." Give this a chance.
