danicali I love the cast! That's why while I was bored, my eye was caught by it. I got myself situated and watched it. Last night, I watched "Victoria" which was supposed to be super scary. I wasn't all that frightened by it. But, because I watched "Victoria", Netflix recommend this movie. After watching this one alone in my living room surrounded by darkness, I had to turn on the lights!! Creeped me out!! The premise of non-believers struck a cord. The story was both enticing and suspenseful. The ending....just....wow! Not expected!I usually get bored with scary movies but, this one had me glued! Highly recommend it if you enjoy mystery suspension!
Nitzan Havoc I've watched 6 Souls a few years back, before starting my project of documenting, rating and reviewing a list of Horror films. I can summarize this review for you TL;DR lazies by saying - wow, I'm so glad I've watched it again, stop reading and go watch it now.The story, plot and script, while original and innovative just the way they should be, are far from being perfect, but even as the shortcomings of this great film they deserve more than the rate this film currently has here on IMDb (6.1? An atrocity, a travesty of justice, and pretty much BS). The film starts up and builds up as an Insanity Horror-Psycho Thriller flick, dealing with Multiple Personality Disorder (or lack thereof). Only towards the second half does the film expose its supernatural motive, as was shown in its trailers. The only other Horror film I recall using this rather cheap and redundant "deception tactic" is Insidious, and in my book comparing any film to insidious is a huge complement for it. The problem with 6 Souls is that the start up and build up lead us to a very disappointing (in my opinion) "highlight point", and since the turning point it's nothing but plot holes and lack of logic... Without these, the end would have been far less anticlimactic, and would have spared this film the Curse of Anticlimactic Endings, which has been ravaging the Horror genre for the last decade or so.Having said that, I have nothing but praises for this film to add. In regards to the acting - main actress Julian Moore is excellent, and has received a much better film to star in after the disappointing Forgotten. However, the Oscar definitely goes to the exquisite, profound and awe-strikingly amazing Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Throughout the film, Meyers plays no less than 4 different characters, and gives each a different body language, voice intonation, facial expressions and acting personality. His role, even if nothing else, makes this film worth watching (and as far as other Horror actors are concerned - watching and learning!). In addition, the character of Granny (more than Joyce Feurring's acting, though not half bad) involves some remarkable ideas! All in all - the frame story, the acting and some of the ideas presented in the script are no less than exquisite, and definitely compensate for the average (and below) plot and ending. Definitely worth watching, definitely worth more than 6...
auroravadams This film held a lot of promise. Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers give compelling performances during the first hour. It is the story that goes off the rails. I believe that horror/possession films make an implied contract with the audience that they will understand the premise and reason for the story by the end. Instead, what begins as a great idea of multiple personalities, turns toward Appalachian magic, with no real explanation beyond telling us that around World War I, a preacher told the local folk to turn their faith from the local belief system and science and trust in him to protect them against an outbreak of influenza. He secretly has his children immunized. Flu vaccines were not available until 1938 courtesy of Jonas Salk. The locals murder him and his children, the local witch pulls his soul out of is body.So then we learn that the man with multiple personalities, is really the preacher, and that he is going around first cursing his victims to die from an influenza like cough, and a strange rash on their backs before stealing their souls by sucking them out of their bodies. The multiple personalities are then the stolen souls manifesting in the preacher's body. In no way does the film (edited for Television) explain how the preacher's body is still running around murdering people. Julianne Moore's character's reactions are flat when faced with her father's death, the death of her brother, and finally her daughter. By the end of the movie, we are supposed to be scared by the final scene (reminiscent of The Omen) but instead we are left wondering how did the story evolve into this thread, and feeling cheated and led on a wild goose chase for the last 112 minutes. The first part of the movie is so well done, it makes me want to find the script and then salvage the ending. Finally, the movie was originally released in the UK under the name "The Sheltering", but though the term is used in the second half of the movie associated with the soul-stealing, it is never really defined.
waqjs Generally, movie was going on track, meant all was nice keeping us interesting but in the end it spoiled all movie, when concluding with the punishment of a child as a non-believer. Can anyone tell me that how one is fully aware about his/her religion and beliefs in that age? If a child in this age commits a crime, he/she is not accounted for as he/she doesn't have sense of responsibility which comes with certain age, then how God can punish someone in this age for not recognizing Him or saying a word against Him. Truthfully speaking, what motivated the writer to write such a story about child's part but if I would be a producer, I wouldn't agree to invest in this production at all.
