Synopsis

Ranma Saotome, a teenage martial artist, and his father Genma travel to the 'cursed training ground' of Jusenkyo in China. There, despite the warnings of the Chinese guard, they fall into the cursed springs. From now on, whenever Ranma is doused in cold water, he turns into a girl and a cute, well-built redhead at that. Hot water changes him back into a man again, but only until the next time. To make matters worse, his father engages him to Akane Tendo, a girl who hates boys.

Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Teodor Huldt ---VERY MINOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE ENDING! VERY, VERY MINOR!---Ranma ½ is like a bag of candy. It's got sweet candy, sour candy, liquorice, all types of yummy goodness. The bag is, however, also bottomless. You eat one, you eat two, three but sooner or later you get tired. There's just too much candy! That's how I feel about this show.Don't get me wrong, I love Ranma! It's easily one of my favorite shows! The humor will break your sides, the characters are top-notch and the action is superb! None of the characters feel the same and their back stories are all equally absurd. The love triangles are just as fun and entertaining. Watching Ranma Saotome's life getting harder by 10 with each episode is tons of fun and the music accompanying it is delightfully cheesy. It's just sooo good! The show has but three flaws that kind of hold hands: its length, its character development and its ending. The show is way too long. It just goes on and on. It also has a great problem with the character development, more precisely the development of the relationships. Nothing in this show seem to go anywhere. The relationships stay pretty much the same throughout the series and it's really sad. The changes are minor. On top of this, there's the end-... hold on, let me rephrase that... On top of this, there's NO ending. It just stops, no conclusion at all. But is Ranma ½ still worth it? Hell yes! The show is, despite its length, still amazingly funny, energetic and crazy. All of the characters are interesting and fun, the longer story arcs are fantastic and the action is constantly at it's highest level. Don't miss out on this great show! (Also, the manga is even better if you're into that. It has an actual ending and conclusion, giving it a slight advantage over the show. The art is also really beautiful!)
ktru pce admittedly, I first picked up Ranma 1/2 when I was around twelve. I was in the library and searched desperately for something good to read. Then, I went to the Comic/Manga section and spotted this book. At my first few reads through the chapters I didn't really know what was going on, but I knew that I LOVED it. I even took it home for a few more reads over. Frankly, I wasn't getting anywhere. And then, about five months (I'm 16 now) ago my friend was watching some anime series and I remembered about this Manga. I couldn't remember what it was called, but recalled that the author was Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Inu Yasha. I Googled it, and then made a rash decision to watch all 161 episodes. At first I was a little thrown off by the 1990 graphics, but it didn't really matter in the end. No anime has ever made me laugh so hard and rewind, watch again. I once watched 45 consecutive episodes within a day. I don't know how I did it... but I couldn't stop. Eventually, after about two days, I grew obsessed. I even dreamt--as crazy as this sounds--about watching Ranma. Never have I found a series so enjoyable, so funny, and so heartwarming to watch. To this day 161 episodes are not enough to keep me satisfied. Of course the cliffhanger ending was enough to make me go bonkers, but the series alone was enough to make me continue reading. Ranma 1/2 is about a boy named Ranma Saotome and his dad Genma Saotome. INTENSE martial artists. They are so intense, that they went to the ancient training grounds in China and became 'cursed'. The grounds were full of different pools of springs, and if you land in one, you take the shape of whatever drowned there when doused in cold water. For Genma, that was a PANDA, and for Ranma that was a... girl! It's a very crafty fun loving story. On top of that, Genma promises his friend that Ranma will marry one of his daughters to keep the Tendo dojo alive. 'Course the one he gets matched up with hates his guts and the feelings mutual. Obviously they start to like one another, but both way to stubborn to admit it. But.. Genma has a history of doing this. He promised Ranma to many girls. Trust me. It's worth watching. It's humorous, heartwarming and all around amazing.
tjranma This is probably the most unique Anime series I've ever laid eyes on. I was floored at the hilariousness of the situations the characters got themselves into with each new adventure, big & small, in Japan all because of Genma's craziness when it comes to his son/daughter Ranma Saotome! One trip to China's Bayankala Range/Qinghai Province leads to the curses of Ranma, Genma, and a few others that become involved, and you have one outrageous series from the Manga Master herself, Rumiko Takahashi. I certainly have enjoyed it, myself, and collected a lot of the Anime on video and a couple on DVD. Highly recommended for fans of Japanese animation!
maikeru82 If there is one good way to describe Ranma 1/2 (Nibun No Ichi), it would be absolutely HILARIOUS. The interaction between characters, and many of the characters' backgrounds are unbelievable-- There are so many odd characters in the series which you grow a liking for. It also mixes martial arts elements into, akin to Dragonball Z, except much more smoothly-animated. The combination of interesting fights with equally interesting characters makes this show one of the best, in my opinion.
