Mjeteconer Just perfect...
Odelecol Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Lela The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
patrick powell The 'from the producers of Downton Abbey' will have alerted us. Those who just simply loved, loved, loved Downton and thought it was the acme of contemporary drama will have been beside themselves with anticipation when they saw the trailers for Jamestown and undoubtedly as I write are gushing about how really, really, really brilliant Jamestown is. The rest of us (I gave Downton ten minutes and gave up) will sigh and know exactly what to expect. Last night I watched the first episode and got exactly what I expected.Superficial doesn't begin to describe it: the characters are at best two-dimensional (often, though this is almost impossible, slipping into just one dimension), the dialogue is banal going on dire, the plot lines are lazily established in a matter of seconds, the set is straight out of Disney and generally Jamestown lives up (or down) to expectations as unchallenging pap for the great unwashed.Ironically, given that this is a big bucks production on sale worldwide, the producers have hired some top actors who all know how to do the biz. It's just a shame they weren't given far better material to work with. I don't at all doubt that with a substantial proportion of viewers, the Downton freaks, Jamestown is 'excellent, amazing and brilliant and a really, really, really good way to learn history'. But then as they say, 'eat sh*t, seven trillion flies can't be wrong'.
freestone-02396 Without a shadow of a doubt, this heap of dross is a total waste of television space. It is even worse than either the Last Kingdom or the latest series of Orange is the New Black*. Where do these producers get these really bad actors/actresses from? Is there some special school for the extremely wooden who simply cannot act convincingly enough to carry a part or deliver lines effectively? One can only assume that the director & producer were head prefects at this particular school for the hard of understanding. They consistently portray these women of these particular eras as resolute & strongly opinionated about the politics of that time, as a very few were, immaculately dressed & with perfect hair & make-up, telling men just what they thought should be done regarding almost anything. Well here's a newsflash, all they would have got then was a smack in the mouth & told shut up & go away. Which is precisely what this series should do. * I never thought that I would ever criticise this particular series, but this story line was just plain stupid & lazy, & it seemed to overrun by about 7 episodes.
John Erik Twombly Why are the accents modern day English? The English accent was equivalent to the modern Northern American. In other words, in 1607 even the British SOUNDED American. When will TV and movies get this straight? If British actors are imported for the appearance of "authentic", when is the UK going to get with it? The massive shift to the "modern" accent was not complete before at least 1750, and most of it occurred between 1700-1750.
fandomfatale I checked out the reviews on here before I watched the first episode, and proceeded despite the overall negativity. I'm glad I did - I was hooked right away and I won't find the wait until the next episode easy. I understand how some people care about historical accuracy - but I couldn't care less and I'm sure that's true for many viewers too, and I don't think you could call any of this show's mistakes egregious. They made some compromises for convenience, some to spice things up, and some probably out of ignorance but if it's spoiling someone's enjoyment of the story then that's on them because there's nothing ridiculous. Overall I think it's a finely polished show, focused mainly on the relationships between the characters, and particularly the struggles of the new female arrivals to find their place in the settlement and carve out some agency for themselves. I like all of the main characters a lot, and I don't get to say that very often. Verity and Jocelyn in particular are delightful. I can't wait to see what they are going to do and say next. It's not as witty as Downton Abbey, but it's soapy in the same way. However, I wouldn't assume it would attract the same kinds of fans.
