Micitype Pretty Good
Maidexpl Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
Kailansorac Clever, believable, and super fun to watch. It totally has replay value.
Gary The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
wgingery This is long, but generally interesting: good acting and production values. But is it still relevant?. I see that the National Theatre has mounted a production featuring Nathan Lane and former Spiderman Andrew Garfield. Why?The play's treatment of the AIDS story seems dated; the coda mercilessly exposes the sentimentality of the author's "message." Likewise the episodes featuring the wife: boring! You can safely fast forward.Clearly, the author's most intense emotional connections are with the negative characters: with the closeted lawyer and most of all with Roy Cohn, whose political heir is, of course, Donald Trump. Al Pacino's portrayal is over-the-top and un-turn-away-able.The whole angel thing was, for me, a misfire. Though it is spectacular, it ends up sidetracking the drama. The scenes in heaven (conceived with a gay New Yorker's love/hate for San Francisco and filmed in Italy at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli) are anti-climactic, ill-conceived, and badly written. As just one proof, even with the director's help, the poor actor playing Prior can't deliver the lines in a convincing way.
Desertman84 Angels in America is a HBO miniseries adapted from the Pulitzer Prize- winning play of the same name by Tony Kushner. It has superb cast namely: Justin Kirk,Al Pacino,Patrick Wilson,Meryl Streep,Ben Shenkman,Mary- Louise Parker,Emma Thompson and Jeffrey Wright.Mike Nichols directed. Set in 1985,the film has at its core the story of two couples whose relationships dissolve amidst the backdrop of Reagan era politics, the spreading AIDS epidemic and a rapidly changing social and political climate. The story centers around Prior Walter and Louis Ironson, a gay couple that falls apart when Prior grows ill as a result of AIDS. But cancer is not the only thing invading Prior's life: He begins to have religious visions of an angel announcing that he is a prophet. Louis, who doesn't cope well with disease and suggestions of mortality, leaves and starts a relationship with Joe Pitt, a closeted Mormon who works for Roy Cohn -- the real-life right-wing lawyer, notorious for his ruthless behind-the- scenes machinations. Add in Joe's depressed and hallucinating wife Harper, his determined but open-minded mother Hannah, a fierce drag queen/nurse named Belize, and you've still only begun to discover the wealth of characters and story lines in Kushner's ambitious work. This is a great mini-series. Although it contains a lot of gay themes,it touches more than that.It tells about the changes in society and how people are affected by it at all levels and it touches on other themes such as about AIDS, conservative politics, history, relationships, self awareness, religion, theology, love, forgiveness, survival and transcendence. Also,it contains great acting from its superb cast led by Al Pacino and Meryl Streep. And most of all,it is must-see to fully understand what people go through in society.
PansLabyrinth101 Tony Kushner's play, Angels in America was on Broadway in the 90's and won the Tony for Best Play twice. One for Perestorika and one for Mellenium Approaches. These 2 parts is what this wonderfully moving and touching film is adapted from.Mike Nichols directs one of his best films with one of the best casts in the past 20 years. The whole cast cared about there roles so much and you could tell they worked incredibly hard with Nichols to try and get as much emotion out of their roles as possible.Justin Kirk really carries this movie with his incredibly beautiful and vulnerable performance. Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Patrick Wilson, Ben Shenkman, Emma Thompson and the wonderfully effective Mary Louise Parker all deliver what are some of their best performances. This gorgeous film has a fantastic look that keeps your eyes glued to the screen. It was an absolutely beautiful experience. The last scene moved me in ways that I didn't know a movie could. It wonderful, tragic, philosophical and absolutely lovely to watch. 6 hours was not enough.
public-92 I have watched this heavy, difficult five hours, and it was worth it. Such brilliant and beautiful words among us, illuminating a strange cultural melange of our country and times. When I see wrestling or the "news" on television, I hope that there are not alien intelligences watching us, and feeling disdain for such pathetic displays. But if there are such, watching and judging, I can only hope that they see things like this, and know that there are brilliant individuals among us. There is beauty and thought, intelligence and light of reason, in this sea of apathetic stupidity and greed.
