Wordiezett So much average
StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Erica Derrick By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
jmvscotland I've just wasted 96 minutes of my life on this so I won't waste too much time on a review. This movie? Totally unbelievable rubbish. Not exciting, not suspenseful, not credible, wooden acting, predictable plot. Nothing new at all. It's a British movie that's trying to be an American shoot 'em up drama. The Americans make some wonderful movies but with an awful lot of duds thrown in, many of them of this tired old ilk. If I wanted to watch a thoroughly predictable and ridiculous good guys and bad guys movie of this type, it would probably be one of the better American ones. Seriously, don't waste your time and heartbeats on this crap. JMV
Mischief810 This film is good but not great. But is not bad at all. Mark Strong is at his best and James McEvoy turns in a very good performance as well. You also almost immediately get the sense that Andrea Riseborough in the role of Sarah is a near perfect partner for Max (McEvoy). If you like a lot of shooting, high speed action and plot intrigue in an action thriller, you will have a lot of fun watching. You get a little of each in almost every scene. This is however a lower budget film. There's not a lot of CGI special effects. There are no blockbuster, high-dollar actors here to attract the kind of theater or disc demand to expect that this was going to be a box office smash. Aside from Strong, McEvoy and Riseborough, the acting is good but not great (see my lede). The plot also has a few tiny holes in it but they're not enough to ruin anything. It's just kind of a fun flick to sit down to after dinner and be entertained by a fast-paced action thriller with bullets flying, plot twists (tiny holes and all)and decent acting. If that's what you're looking for, you'll be pleased, and then surprised that this was over before you knew it.
Joe When you look back in film history, there have been numerous great British made thrillers and gangster movies. This missed the boat and will never catch it.What we have is a production with a tick list that has a mark against some notable boxes: good actors, rich settings, interesting lighting, fine directing etc. They forgot though about the screenplay which really is poor. Some clichés, a lot of nonsense and nothing big or clever.James McAvoy really needs to speak to his voice trainer, his accent was appalling. A fine actor reduced to looking out of place here.Apart from one shoot-out in the last quarter, I really don't have anything much good to say of the action which was mostly dull. Some say it is supposedly influenced by Hong Kong gangster work, this doesn't seem to pay off or understand the genre. I've watched lots of those movies, this doesn't cut the mustard. There's no point saying much more about this, just put it to the side and move on. Very disappointing.
Peter Pluymers A persistent policeman. A top criminal. Again slipped through the net. Corruption at the police department and on a political level. A political game for a top job. The policeman and the criminal go hand in hand against corruption. Good cop lets the top criminal escape. That's it in a nutshell. Again a police thriller with the standard routine and nothing earth-shattering. The opening scene was quite interesting in terms of visualization. But it felt as if it was going to be something futuristic with those big glassy buildings and deserted streets.Strong was very impressive in his role as the fierce intellectual top criminal. He almost has a facial expression like Statham. I also liked the interaction and dialogues between Max and Sarah : refreshing and humorous.Daniel Mays also knows how to pick his parts because just like in "The Bank Job" (I've recently watched that one too) he kicks the bucket here too. But in general it was only a weak movie and a thin story. And one thing that annoys me the most is the amount of ammunition fired and the amount of misses.
