RipDelight This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Gutsycurene Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
Haven Kaycee It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
areatw It seems the entire budget for 'The Tourist' went on recruiting Depp and Jolie, because almost everything else about this $100 million production seems to have been put together with minimal effort. Even Depp and Jolie themselves are a disappointment, with Depp looking bored out of his mind most of the time and Jolie never really taking to her role. Although given the material they were working with, you can't really blame them.Everything about 'The Tourist' is terrible. The plot is plain silly, the characters one dimensional and shallow, and the dialogue between them forced and unnatural. The only positive to speak of is the beautiful Venice setting and scenery, which offers a welcome distraction from what is a truly awful movie all round.
TheLittleSongbird Expectations for 'The Tourist' were not particularly high. Despite having a talented cast, experienced writers (including talented Julian Fellowes) and a far from amateurish director, that it was negatively received by most critics and often cited one of the worst films of its year was a turn off.Seeing it for myself, as any film, good or bad and regardless of its genre, deserves, 'The Tourist' to me was nowhere near as bad as reputed. As far as films from 2010 go, there are far worse which are not worth mentioning. However, 'The Tourist', considering the talent on and off screen, could have been much better than it turned out to be and again from personal opinion one of the year's most disappointing. And no, contrary to what its defenders lead you to believe, nobody who disliked the film was expecting an Oscar contender. I myself certainly wasn't, wanted more than anything for the talent to be used to full potential and for the film to be at fun intriguing and fun.Its best asset are the production values and makes up 2 stars of my personal rating, due to them being so good. 'The Tourist' is sensuously photographed, the costumes are suitably elegant and the locations positively dazzle, Venice in particular look stunning. The supporting cast also do well with what they have, another strong case of the supporting cast being significantly better than the leads, Steven Berkoff in particular seems to be really enjoying himself and Paul Bettany is very rarely less than game. Timothy Dalton has fun in a rather underwritten role. Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are admittedly great eye candy too. However, the two leads underwhelm hugely, and this is coming from someone who has seen great performances from both (Depp in 'Edward Scissorhands' and 'Ed Wood' for examples, and Jolie in 'Changeling' and 'Girl Interrupted'). Depp's performance is a mix of hamminess and being bored out of his mind. Jolie has an ice maiden femme fatale role and not only looks uncomfortable but gives one of the blandest and most annoying performances of this particular type of role in film history. There is no chemistry between them whatsoever either. That the characters are shallow and one dimensional works against the cast, and even more so the script. The script clunks even more so than cutlery being dropped on the floor, one can also really tell that there was more than one writer involved and there is a real sense of them working independently of each other rather than being a team.Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck clearly didn't have any idea what to do with the film, with the momentum and the way the story is told being all over the place. It's the story that dooms 'The Tourist' in particular, a lot of the time it barely goes anywhere and has a tendency to be told in a muddled and convoluted fashion with twists that are easily foreseeable, haphazard and ridiculous. It was very difficult judging 'The Tourist' for what it is, because it tried to be more than one thing (too many) and doesn't do much if at all with any of it.Overall, not a complete disaster but a real disappointment. 4/10 Bethany Cox
gkeith_1 I don't like Depp as a slob, but here it was important. He was supposed to be an unkempt math teacher, presumably high school. I didn't like his light eyebrows or terribly unkempt hair in the early scenes. Later, I realized that this was his calculated appearance in order to appear rather incognito. In Finding Neverland, Johnny doesn't "get the girl", but here he does, in the end. Johnny has been in a lot of quirky nonromantic parts, including Edward Scissorhands and Willy Wonka. Here, it is more of an adult role which even includes fantasizing about a beautiful woman.Angelina is beautiful and ravishing. She wears beautiful clothes. Her black outfit reminded me of when she was in Maleficent. She has excellent hairstyles. I especially liked her updo at the ball. Despite what detractors have said, I liked it. It was very elegant and sophisticated. It was hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys. I had to watch it twice, in order to figure some things out. Look, there's a James Bond, Timothy Dalton, playing a secondary/tertiary part. This is rather shameful, but I realize that ensemble acting does hold a film together. He was the one, near the end, who authorized the shooting of the chief bad guy and all of his goofy minions.10/10 Great.P.S. Depp was reading a spy novel in his opening scene. This must have been a harbinger of the coming storyline, since all I saw later were a bunch of crooks, criminals and villains each trying to grease up their mustaches toward a nifty conclusion after we were kept in suspense a long time.
Kirpianuscus two seductive actors. and a lot of events. confuse story. and funny adventures. a film about mysteries and meetings, truth and few beautiful landscapes for save the story. it is not easy to understand the purpose of a film who blends clichés and impose to Johnny Depp a role who seems version of Charlot. a comedy more than a thriller, it is nice but far to be convincing, comfortable after a busy day but not enough for represents entertainment. the chemistry between Angelica Jolie and Johnny Depp is only a convention and the acting is almost sketch. because it could be a parody or a too serious unconvincing exercise to remind old fashion movies.short, a chaotic story, two not so bad performances.
