Neive Bellamy Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
Nayan Gough A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Loui Blair It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
mathijsschaap Shame on me: I saw the original 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' for the first time only two years ago, at the age of 39. And I loved it! Good old claustrophobic horror that still holds up today!I saw the 2006 movie once, but I didn't like that one. Today, we saw this 2003 remake for the first time, and -like the original two years ago- it fascinated me, scared me and enjoyed every minute of it! Tobe Hooper should embrace this remake. This is what a remake should be: retelling the story without copying the original: make it your own, OWN it! This is exactly what the creators of the remake have done! And even when Michael Bay was involved! You know: Michael Bay; that overrated, talent-less, narcissistic guy that nobody wants to work with when they have worked with him... That guy who thinks every Transformer movie should be about degrading images about women, as sex symbols, and fast cars, as if every guy is interested in that, especially in the 21th century. But Bay obviously did not direct this great remake! It has only some gore, do not let the haters tell you otherwise, because this is the movie Tobe Hooper would have made if he had the budget back then!Loved this remake, man! I love both: the original and this remake! It has elements you have not seen before, and way more... CHAINSAW!!! ;-)
Kollin Saunders This remake is not nearly as bad as you might expect, but its also not anything exceptional. The movie has several decent ideas and a few memorable scenes that are ultimately bogged down by its inconsistency. The film makes several notable deviations from the original. The most immediately obvious is the intro that acts as if it is a true crime story. This is an interesting idea and ultimately one of the best new ideas of the movie. In addition to this they also try to change to story in a few key ways that ultimately make you wonder, Why? why not just leave, why not just go smoke your 2 pounds of weed and listen to Lynnyrd Skynrd, why do you have to go to the freaky cannibal house. (I'm aware this is a common problem in these movies but it's very notable here) In the original it made sense why they were there. The most noticeable change though has to be its over reliance on gore. The original movie was relatively bloodless, some people look at this and think that's a good thing, I disagree. To me the bloodier the better, just don't dumb down the actual story, the tension, or build up. Use the gore to shock and thrill but do not use it as a crutch to pretend that it makes something scary, that is this films biggest flaw. The movie frequently just jumps straight into things with little to no setup, and when it does have setup its so obvious anyone who has ever seen a horror movie can see it coming from a mile away. If the creators had noticed this instead of just thinking of how brilliant they were to use deceptive shot lines the films would be so much better. However in its defense the film manages to have several good scenes when its not failing at building tension. The movie has several fairly good chase scenes that to me are easily the highlights. No spoilers, but when it gets its action going it executes well mostly. Especially notable scenes are in the basement and in the slaughterhouse, that is where it hits its stride. its just a shame it couldn't pull off slower areas as well.I don't mean this to discourage you from watching the movie; I do it to warn you. Underneath it's problems are a few good moments that i'm glad i saw, but really i'm just disappointed because if the films creators actually gave a damn this could've been something great.
austinkunkle When I was a kid,the 2003 was the one I saw first and I was just amazed by how Leather face looked in this one. I saw the 1974 one and saw he looked pretty classic, but I saw this one and I was like terrified, amazed, and thrilled out of my mind. With this movie being a Micheal Bay film,I was actually impressed. There was only little bit of sexual content,no robot creation, and no fired up explosions. I can understand this is a remake, but he didn't rip it off on the 1974 version 60% of the time. He had his own ideas and horror scares. Not that it was ever scary to me. I don't really get scared with these types of movies anyway; I just get really entertained by their performances, murders and all that. So obviously I'm going to do my greatest to least performance, because I just really enjoy listing them on how much a Texas chainsaw massacre movie impresses me. So 2003,1974,2013,2006,1986,and the last two originals were just horrible, corny, cheesy, and just horrible;not even stupid funny. They were just horrible, and no close to impressed that I'm surprised I even mentioned them. So I'm just pretending they were never made. But what I am excited about is Leather face the movie which I hope comes out pretty soon so I can see how it looks.
Python Hyena The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003): Dir: Marcus Nispel / Cast: Jessica Biel, R. Lee Ermey, Eric Balfour, Mike Vogel, David Dorfman: Although not as pitiful as the Psycho remake, this is still a pointless mess at any rate. It regards an event or crime based on fact regarding killer Ed Gein who is portrayed here as Leather-Face who uses the skin of his victims to create his own person. One element that both films have in common is effective opening scenes. In the original a van load of hippies pick up a deranged hitchhiker, whereas in the remake they pick up a victim who eventually shoots herself. Teenagers stop off at a farm house where chainsaw wielding Leather-face and the rest of his insane family slice and dice them. Not a bad effort by director Marcus Nispel but he is no Tobe Hooper. Only R. Lee Ermey is interesting as the deranged Sheriff. Jessica Biel runs and screams and survives because she is the star. It might have helped greater had she endured more of the mayhem that Marilyn Burns put up with while being forced to be at a demented family dinner where she was sighted as the main course. Eric Balfour and Mike Vogel die graphic deaths. That seems to be the point of this junk. Presents mindless idiots to be murdered by barn yard tools. The original presented a realistic happening while this remake showcases an encore of nonsense. Score: 3 ½ / 10
