Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Derrick Gibbons An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
areatw The fact that the word 'forgettable' appears in just about every review for this film says a lot about how unoriginal and lazy it is. I can't remember the last time I watched an animated film and couldn't wait for it to finish, but that's how I felt about 'The Nut Job'.The animation in this film is great, but it's not enough to distract away from the complete lack of a plot. Characters often make or break animated films and, writing this review a day after watching the film, I can't remember any of the characters or their names.'The Nut Job' is watchable but will probably be enjoyed much more by kids. The only thing I enjoyed about this film was the animation - the plot and characters were completely... forgettable.
Laura Foxey Honestly this movie was disappointing, especially after all the good things I heard about it. The textures in this movie were so terrible that I couldn't stop getting annoyed watching them. Same jokes, same action. Feels like the whole plot was dull and made up within a lunch break. Characters don't stick and by the end you don't feel very connected to anything. You don't get that feeling of satisfaction or emptiness after a movie ends, no emotions whatsoever, and that to me is a failed movie. For children though, it's alright, but even kids had enough nut jokes in one hour...
one-nine-eighty An animated tale of wildlife in an American park and their attempts to forage food before a cold winter hits. Surly the Squirrel (Will Arnett ) and Buddy the Rat (Jeff Dunham) are outcasts from the park, their latest attempt to get a stash of food for themselves results in the park's cache of food being destroyed. This is a step too far and as punishment Racoon (Liam Neeson) casts thrown further afield and made to live in the human infested city. Andie (Katherine Heigl) and Grayson (Brendan Fraser) squirrels are charged with finding food that will allow the wildlife to survive the cold winter, by chance they bump into Surely who has a plan afoot for finding a wealth of food which could feed the entire park. Unfortunately the plan involves breaking in and robbing a nut shop which as it happens is owned by human crooks who themselves are planning a daring bank job by tunnelling from the nut shop basement into the local bank. What could possibly go wrong for the crooks or the wildlife? This wasn't the best animated movie I've watched recently, granted it used tried and tested jokes and tie-in's but the problem I found is that some of the things I saw in the movie I'd seen in other movies before, to better effect too - "Over the Hedge" to name but one. As such the film lacked an element of humour and originality. I did however like the visuals and in particularly the nod to the 1950's, this was classy and colourful which made up for the lack of originality. Truth be told it was the animation style which saved this and allowed me to award more than 1 star. There is a message in the film about valuing friends but for the majority of the film it's a little flat. The voice cast don't sound like they had a good time making this, Katherine Heigl and Liam Neeson sound like they are bored and Brendan Fraser sounds like he's embarrassed to be reading the script aloud, perhaps an unknown cast could of elicited better conveyance of emotions. These are probably the same feeling kids are having when watching this lacklustre film. In summary this isn't painful, it is harmless, but it is forgettable and uninspiringly unoriginal. 4 out 10 - I hope there wont be a nut job 2, if there is I think the budget would be better spent on better writers rather than celebrity voice artist.
David Arnold A city park squirrel, Surly, has gone too far with his latest caper leading to the animal community's winter food cache being destroyed. Exiled from the park by Raccoon, Surly and his rat sidekick, Buddy, have to find a way to survive on the streets. However, all is OK again when they see a local nut store. Meanwhile, park squirrels, Andie and Grayson, have been charged by Raccoon to find a new food source which inevitably leads to them crossing paths with Surly. Andie soon learns of Surly's plan of a nut heist, so she convinces Surly into working together to share the booty. However, after this discovery, Raccoon puts his own side agenda into place. Will everything work out OK, or will Surly and Andie be double-crossed by Raccoon? The Nut Job is a delve back to the old types of cartoons like Road Runner and Tom & Jerry as it's very much a slapstick type of animated comedy. This is like the squirrel version of The Three Stooges as it contains a lot of that type of comedy. Lots of banging into & sliding down walls/glass, slaps, hits, punches etc with a good few fart jokes added for good measure. The humour in the film is a bit rude at times, but unless you're a prude there is no harm at all in letting younger kids watch this, especially as the toilet humour here is no worse than what it's like in Shrek, for example. There's no real complaints about the film for me, and while I don't dislike Brendan Fraser, I don't think he's that funny, so when I saw his name in the opening credits a slight "oh no" did enter my mind. Thankfully he's not bad here and he does a pretty decent job.I guess there may not be anything utterly original here story wise, but with a really good voice cast, some good funny characters (especially the cardinal) and great animation, especially on Blu-ray, you can do much, much worse than The Nut Job.Not absolutely fantastic but it's definitely worth a watch and it definitely has more than just a giggle here and there.
