Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Hadrina The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Nayan Gough A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Scarlet The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
jjnxn-1 Exceptionally well made TV miniseries. Elizabeth Montgomery and Hal Holbrook anchor the film as a couple who seem mismatched but whose differences strengthen their union. Really the story of the growth of a town's gradual formation from the wilderness and a woman's indomitability in spearheading its birth. A strong supporting cast lead by Jane Seymour on her way up and an incredibly young William H. Macy add to the pleasure of this fine entertainment. The only thing missing is a certain grit that would have added to the wilderness feeling of the setting. A very strong showcase for the wonderfully talented and much missed Elizabeth Montgomery.
eileenknows This was a great movie but the characters all had interesting view points. Mistress Bartram was the school teacher who was educated. She is thrown into an affair with the married (highly educated)man to Elizabeth Montgomery's character, who was uneducated. The mistress became pregnant. This was the real awakening for me. Because her lover was married she set out one night to the local tavern to pick up whoever she could so she could get married and have her baby. There were no educated men that were available so she married someone beneath her intelligence and that was the most horrible punishment anyone could pay. No way out. Elizabeth's character rose above and met the higher standards of her husband and worked to become educated. Dorrie Kavanaugh who was also a beautiful woman sadly died a few years after making this film. I will always remember her as having a style that no one has ever duplicated. She was graceful with culture and intelligence, a very beautiful woman.
vlkatzman This is a wonderful mini-series that shows the less glamorous, but realistic side of the settling of the American Frontier. The story has an excellent cast including Hal Holbrook, Elizabeth Montgomery, William H. Macy and others. The characters grow and change as the frontier changes and gets settled. It is unfortunate that this mini-series did not get the press that some others have and has not been repeated often enough. This series is just as good as Roots but recounts a different period of American life.I would love to see it on DVD, if you would too please vote at http://www.tvshowsondvd.com. Currently, it only has 132 votes. Studio execs do look at this site to see who would like to buy television shows.
doreentiki I actually recorded this in all its parts when I saw it was being aired on TBS. Of course I got the commercials too, but I felt it was worth it to be able to watch The Awakening Land whenever I wanted to. Of course, I would buy it in a heartbeat if it was ever put out on VHS or DVD. The series was cast so wonderfully. Each person did his/her role superbly. The first time I watched this series I was "hooked". Of course, I've always loved Elizabeth Montgomery and Hal Holbrook, but the historical insight was fascinating too.I would recommend this to everyone, but they wouldn't be able to see it like I do, whenever they want to because of the unavailability.
