GazerRise Fantastic!
Caryl It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
rioplaydrum I am really confused as to how anybody could have liked this film at all. Seriously. 15 minutes of it was all me and my girlfriend could take. There is so much wrong with this movie it's hard to know where to begin.First off, the dialog between characters is unbelievably boring and slow. To see this kind of work out of veteran actors was embarrassing. I'd swear Pachino was either doing it on purpose or he's had a stroke. Really awful.Christopher Walken was equally dumbed-down and wooden. We didn't even watch long enough to get to Arkin. Many times when watching a bad movie, the poorness of the story usually has unintended comedic quality for that reason alone. This picture can't even provide that. It's just random, confusing and completely void of any kind of rhythm or personality.Thank God I only paid 2$ for it the bargain store, because now my copy is going to the fine folks at GoodWill. No, scratch that. It will be thrown away. I can't in good conscious let some other sucker plunk down hard earned money for it.That wouldn't be right.
bowmanblue Before I wrote this, I checked out some of the other reviews and, based on what I read, you're probably not going to agree with me. Apparently, from what I've seen, the majority of people who watched 'Stand Up Guys' really enjoyed it.I'm not saying that it wasn't an okay film, but, based on having two of the greatest actors in the leading roles, I thought it was going to be better than it was.Christopher Walken plays a hit-man who's charged with the task of 'offing' Al Pacino who has been released from prison after 28 years. The only trouble is... they're friends and so Walken takes Pacino on one last night of hell-raising.It's a good premise and it is at its best when it's sentimental. However, it was also billed as a 'comedy' and I didn't find that much to laugh at (primary some smutty jokes about the problems elderly men have between the sheets and that's about it).Pacino overacts and Walken underacts. And, no matter how great the actors are (and they are great!), the somewhat average script makes little more than an average movie.I didn't hate it. It passed an hour and a half. It's just I was expecting better, but, like I say, there are a lot of very positive 4 and 5 star reviews, so what do I know?
Thebe Bashaleebee I wasn't paying attention when this movie came out, so I didn't know it came out.Had an urge to watch something with Walken in it and so I watched Seven Psychopaths and while studying Walken in that picture I was reminded of Al Pacino and wondered if they ever were in a flick together. So, I googled and found this gem of a movie.Hollywood missed a big ticket not teaming those two up decades ago. What a fun movie to watch: I loved watching the dialog between Walken and Pacino so much, I had to watch it twice. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough of a ride. Loved the dead pan humor and I just couldn't get enough. If you are a fan of Pacino and Walken this is a MUST see. A bit sad to see them both aged and myself aged, but yet there is a warmth to the sadness. Boy, I hope the two get casted together at least one more time. Why the rating on IMDb is so low is beyond me. I'll be watching it again eventually because I enjoyed it so much.I wish I could personally thank the writer, the director, the casting people and especially whoever it was that first suggested to get Pacino and Walken for this movie. The script was perfect for the two of them and they were golden.
Dominic LeRose With ridiculous dialog, lousy characters, and a predictable plot you'll get a terrible film. 'Stand Up Guys' is every bit of that. Al Pacino plays Val, a recently released from prison gangster who is in his old days and comes from a bad past. His old partner Doc (Christopher Walken) is assigned to put a hit on him by his boss for revenge on an event that occurred. Doc gives Val one last day for the two of them to enjoy life, and boy does it get tacky. Val uses prostitutes, dances with women, gets involved in violence and stealing, and of course goes to confession at church like every redemption film with an Italian male lead. Nothing is unique in this film at all! The acting is horrendous and Pacino gives the worst performance of his career. Fisher Stevens makes this film so tacky by shooting it in a weird style with nothing unique. The forced comedy and lame message bring nothing to the table. All you can expect is a forced film with unnatural plots and characters that make you want to stand up and leave. Be a stand up guy and do not see this film!
