Intcatinfo A Masterpiece!
Freaktana A Major Disappointment
Lucia Ayala It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
Isbel A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Whas I decided to watch it because I didn't have the movie that I actually wished to watch that night. I knew the actress thank to "Bridge to Terabithia", so I said "let's see how it is". I honestly don't care about surf, so I didn't expect too much from "Soul Surfer". But I have to admit that I was wrong! I don't know why it's rated only 7.1, I rate it 10/10! And I'm not always gentle in rating movies. The story is really great! And the way she passes through these experiences is greater!!! It's touching and emotional, but it also shows you the bright side! She's so solar! This really give you hope. Thank you. Bethany Hamilton, you got all my respect and appreciation. Go on like this, and good luck for your future!
Python Hyena Soul Surfer (2011): Dir: Sean McNamara / Cast: AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, Lorraine Nicholson, Carrie Underwood: Feel good surfer movie about propelling through God's strength. Based on a true story of Bethany Hamilton who was on her way to the nationals in terms of her surfing until a tragic accident occurs where she loses an arm in a shark attack. Now she must deal with the defect as well as the media press surrounding it. Very predictable as we know that Hamilton will conquer the odds and surf with one arm, however the film is extremely encouraging to anyone who ever felt held back in life. Director Sean McNamara shoots great surfing action but this is also a terrific break through performance for AnnaSophia Robb. As Bethany her discouragement is overturned through a mission trip where a famous tidal wave hit, as well as the fan mail encouraging her to return to surfing. Robb demonstrates the hardship of one arm but also the triumphant comeback. Dennis Quaid plays her father who is undergoing a knee surgery when the tragedy strikes. Her mother is played by Helen Hunt. Both parents struggle to adapt to their daughter's condition yet remain optimistic. Lorraine Nicholson plays her best friend and fellow surfer who experiences the trauma of the incident as well as being overprotective. Carrie Underwood makes a decent cameo appearance as a church youth worker who helps Bethany overcome her fears and encourages her to return to surfing. Anyone who wishes to be encouraged through the hard times in life then this film offers it in abundance as well as a lot of soul. Score: 9 / 10
TheBlueHairedLawyer Bethany is your average boring, snotty, melodramatic teenage girl, but one exception is her intense love of surfing. She lives in Hawaii right next to the beach, is home-schooled and has plenty of time to surf with her parents and siblings, as well as competing with her friend in a surfing contest. With everything going her way, it seems like nothing could go wrong... but the same day her father goes for surgery Bethany has her arm eaten by a shark and realizes that life won't ever be the same. Somehow she proves though, that even when you seem beyond help, with support and optimism you can do anything.I have to say, at times Bethany seemed like quite a snob; it wasn't until her terrible experience that she changed from her lousy personality. The soundtrack was half-decent, the acting was pretty good and the plot was based on a true story. The real Bethany Hamilton is a famous surfer, who really does only have one arm.One complaint I have is the large amount of religion shoved into the film. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against religion, but I'm not religious and all the "have faith in god" stuff was rather annoying. In moderation it would add to the plot and the character of Bethany, but too much of it got on my nerves.
vob Sometimes I just have to rate a movie on what it does to you. This is one of those that gets a 10 for how it feeds the soul and uplifts the entire spirit. Not because of it's incredible acting, or directing or production. Just because it is food everyone should feast on once in a while. You don't have to believe in God to be enriched by this. The fact that it's based on a true story is part of it's strength. Kudos to Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid for participating in a faith based movie (not overbearingly so) when Hollywood seems so full of superficial nonsense. The fact that her main rival ended up being her friend, despite the bitterness shown to her both when she had her arm and not, is a testament to how a little love goes a long way to turn bad to good.
