Fatma Suarez The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Jeffrey Young Many people unabashedly love, "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" because it and others like, 'Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer', 'Year Without Santa', 'Charlie Brown Christmas', 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas', 'Frosty The Snowman', represent everything that was warm, comforting, and loving about our collective childhoods. The message of love, compassion, charity, and redemption never outgrows us and remains relevant for our entire lives.Still, why continue watching these beautiful Christmas specials your entire life? It's because it's nice to be happy and positive with yourself and towards others if only during the holiday season. No one should be content becoming and remaining a miserable adult. There's a lot to be said about keeping your inner child alive all through your life, as demonstrated at the end of Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town when it shows adults saying, 'humbug'. These people totally missed the message of Christmas. It's impossible not to see Santa Clause Is Comin' To Town with adult sensibility today in 2017. Would there be criticism depicting Germans as mean-spirited bad people as shown here? But remember when this animatronic special was created, the year, 1970.In 1970, World War 2 has been over for only 25 years. The ugly memories of Nazi Germany, and the necessity for destroying the Third Reich at great cost and sorrow remains strong in the minds of the adults who collaborated to produce this classic great, Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town. Hence you see references to German tyranny as a metaphor for evil still in the world. If produced today, it would be a totally different production with different, more neutral villains.
Rainey Dawn This is the story of Chris Kringle became Santa Claus. From his infancy into his fame - this movie will answer all the questions the kids have about the holly jolly man himself. A very good Christmas family classic. Even if you don't believe in Santa Claus the story is still good with a great message at the end of if we could all learn to be like the character then there might be peace on earth and happiness in the world. The film explains in the end how if we could give of ourselves and each of us learn to be happy then we would have a happy planet - it's not about money, stores, toys and consumerism but about love, joy and giving of your time and self.I remember this one from my childhood, watched it again recently and find this to be a joyous and exceptionally good movie.10/10
utgard14 I love the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials so much. The animation, the songs, the fun characters. They're just a simple joy that always brings a smile to my face. How anybody can watch them without getting the warm fuzzies is beyond me. This particular special is about the origin of Santa Claus (charmingly voiced by Mickey Rooney), as told by everybody's favorite mailman Fred Astaire. A lovely, funny story with lots of heart and an innocence we just don't seem able to replicate these days. Sigh times have changed so much. Just look at some of the reviews here or go to the message board. So many people trying to turn every song or stray sentence into something dirty or crass. It's disheartening. Anyway, try to ignore all that and just watch these timeless specials and enjoy them as they were meant to be enjoyed.
breakdownthatfilm-blogspot-com Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass are known for their classic Christmas special musicals so it didn't surprise me when I discovered that they made a film on the origins of Santa as well. Neither did I find it any less entertaining. Even if the story is fiction, the possibilities to why Santa Claus climbs down chimneys and puts toys in stockings is rather interesting to know about. The teleplay, written by Romeo Muller, includes a lot of nice trivia that the usual Christmas celebrator won't know of about, for example why we say Santa does all these different actions on Christmas Eve. Narrating this story is actor Fred Astaire who tells us how Santa came to be. Voicing Santa Claus is Mickey Rooney who if you didn't know who he was, you'd almost never guess he was the funny looking security guard from Night at the Museum (2006).Maybe one of the goofiest characters in this film is the villain named Burgermeister Meisterburger. A grumpy town mayor with the ego the size of the Mt. Everest. And let's not forget The Winter Warlock, the evil wizard who lives high up in the hills. All these characters, no matter what role they play are fun to watch and listen too. The animation recalls that of Rankin and Bass' other Christmas special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964). The songs are still catchy even though Johnny Marks did not write them. Altogether, it's a good eye-opener to the background of Santa Claus.Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town has catchy music and good cast of voice actors. Plus, its informative background on Santa Claus is a cool history lesson.
