Evengyny Thanks for the memories!
Moustroll Good movie but grossly overrated
ShangLuda Admirable film.
Robert Joyner The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
wheelz-lv The story is as cheesy as it gets - a girl meets a boy, they fall in love, then there's heartbreak and so on, but the story is not the main focus here. The movie has some great selection of rock hits and ballads from the 80s and if you enjoy those the same way I do, then you most likely won't be disappointed. The mashups of several songs into one musical act is also very well done - looks seamless and sounds great. The cast selection is decent and they do a good job for most of the movie, but do leave a bit to be desired still. The acting of Tom Cruise is spot on, however the singing part did fall a bit flat at times, at least to my liking. He just doesn't have that 80s glam rock punch in his voice. Same goes for Diego Boneta - while his singing was maybe a tad better than Cruise's, his acting wasn't up to par. Similar can be said about Julianne Hough and Mary J. Blige - they get the singing part right, but ain't spectacular in playing their roles. You can definitely spot the Hollywood influence on this classical Broadway show as the movie does feel Glee-like, which might bother some people. I personally, didn't mind it that much - I'm sure that if the movie would have been made in late 80s or 90s it would definitely look and feel much different.Overall however I did enjoy the movie - it got back those original 80s hits into my music playlist for a while. So, mission accomplished!
JJAuritt I have only ever seen the movie and not the show itself (which I hope to be able to see one day). Anyway, I have been reading and hearing reviews (that are mixed at best) since the movie came about 6 years ago. I just want to say that I thought the movie was GREAT. I feel that songs that were chosen fit very well with both the story and dialogue that was spoken at the time. I thought the actors did a really good job portraying their characters and the story was outlined really well.I am willing to bet that some people might respond with "You need to see the live show, before you make any judgements". Yes, it is very possible that after seeing the live performance I might agree that movie could/should have been different. However, as we all know stage musicals and movies do NOT always mirror each other to a T. This is just my opinion, thanking you for reading.
orfeas-kasap99 First of all let's say that it was really interesting to see Tom Cruise reach new lengths in a role, in which probably he wouldn't be the first person to come in mind when you think about an actor who can portray a rock star. It's a funny movie with some really good songs and most of the actors do a pretty good job. (Well it's obvious that Russell Brand is the comic relief character but this doesn't mean that it's bad). The plot is not something special but I think its better this way since the point of the whole movie is to show how both the protagonists eventually change. If you are bored, want to hear some good songs and have a few laughs then this movie may turn out to be exactly what you need.
purrfectfire Maybe I started watching this movie under the wrong assumptions. I didn't know that this was a musical production going Hollywood to start with, but in the Netherlands it was sold as a fun portrait of the 80's rock scene.Well... though the songs reminded of that time, I was looking for the rock-part until the end of the movie. Every time an actor belts out a hit, you're reminded that the original, however cheesy, was better, rockier or more honest presented. Though the actors are not bad singers, it's way too clean, sweet, boyband-isch or pop-ish to be considered rock at all.It reminds me of all the great fairy tales, that have been polished to something entirely different by Disney. Rock of ages also feels like it had a treatment in the censorship washing machine.I am all for a good happy ending and also musicals are a bunch of fun, but if you try to portray a certain subculture you have to be careful to do it right. I am living and breathing Rock, though I am open towards other styles and views, but this movie feels like someone took my (metaphorical) balls, painted them pink and threw them in the blender. And this is not only because of the music. The story-line was as hair raising as the washed out shadows of the great 80 hits. The makers explored side story just to have in every minority group possible, every lonely side character needed a partner and really EVERYBODY had to get the happy-ever-after option and didn't spend enough attention to detail for the main story.Though Cruise made for a good Axel Rose sort of Rock good, this was one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
