Pluskylang Great Film overall
Curapedi I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
Rexanne It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
ramsfan We've seen this movie- or a variation thereof- dozens of times before: Guy meets girl, guy falls in love with girl, guy loses girl, guy spares no effort to get girl back. Throw in a violent plot twist involving adultery and betrayal, and you have "Revenge", a movie with entertaining elements that nonetheless falls a bit short.Recently retired US Navy Pilot Jay Cochran (Kevin Costner) visits old friend and crime lord Tibey Mendez (Anthony Quinn) at his palatial estate in Mexico. Here, he meets Tibey's wife Miryea (Madeline Stowe), a reserved, stunning brunette 30 years his junior. Almost immediately, an attraction is felt between Cochran and Miryea, made more so by Tibey's attention to business and the age gap between him and his wife. Cochran and Miryea sleep together and are caught- with devastating consequences for all involved."Revenge" is hurt by several factors. The wild implausibility of a decorated Navy pilot having a Mexican Drug Lord as a close friend strains credibility with the viewer from the start. And though we are supposed to sympathize with Cochran for being beaten to within an inch of his life by Mendez' henchmen, Costner plays the character with an arrogance that makes it tough to do so. Throw in Quinn's visible heartbreak at having his wife stolen, and the Costner character comes across as almost totally unsympathetic. Only our concern for Miryea and the violence showered upon her allow us to care about Costner's frenzied search for her. This is no feel good movie, as all the principal characters suffer dearly: Cochran is nearly killed, Tibey loses his wife and a dear friend, and Miryea is subjected to unspeakable acts of brutality because of her betrayal. Even Cochran's dog is killed. Disney it ain't."Revenge" has its moments and benefits from some good acting. Quinn is in his element here and gives a solid portrayal of a crime lord whose charming veneer belies his brutal nature. Stowe is gorgeous, and plays her role with a waif-like innocence. As such, her character's fate strongly resonates with the viewer. Miguel Ferrer and John Leguizamo do good work as troubleshooters helping Costner find his love. And the always enjoyable James Gammon has a great bit role as a down-on-his-luck Texan. Costner is probably the weakest link here, and since it's his movie, that's a problem.Worth a look, but no new ground broken here.
venkatb83 i read about it here n watched it.. am big fan of ridley n tony scot bro's... n watched some of both of bro's films... after reading many positive reviews about this and after watching it i felt its not up to my imagination expectation from tony...:((what i liked in this film is love....love...love... first half is boring-except some hot scenes..! second half picks well.. lead actors acting is best in intimate scenes...!! climax is very much imaginable...not worst but not too best...u can watch it.u can watch it later...too.. if u miss also u wont regret...!!if u like tony scot-his style of direction-go n watch it-but don't expect to much...i give it 7/10
esoterc_circle I have an idea why : the title and the general genre of this film being 'Action', it has attracted that particular 'action-oriented' and maybe not so 'enlightened' crowd looking for a little, or a lot, of action, and instead what do they get? A Tony Scott curveball in the form of an engaging, often slow-moving (but thoroughly-interesting, if one can appreciate it) LOVE story - and the poor hooligan viewers are all thrown off, so since they can't begin to fathom the depth of emotions between a man and a woman that is touched on here, they resort to bad-mouthing a film they can't understand. Well, you'd think that this film had enough violence to keep this kind of crowd happy (and it certainly does!), but then there's all that 'weird romance stuff' for quite awhile.Oh well, guys - better stick to straight-forward 'shoot 'em up and mow 'em down ' - and stay away from those scary deeper emotions!
lost-in-limbo Never been much of a fan of director Tony Scott's work, but the dramatic thriller "Revenge" starring Kevin Costner, Madeline Stone and Anthony Quinn was a pleasant surprise. Quite harrowing and brutal in its developments, where the forbidden romantic angle takes up most of the time, but because of this, the relationships have depth (loyalty is tested, betrayal comes fast and forgiveness shines through) and emotional attachment making the ending consist of lasting power. It's sweaty, intense and unforgiving where the locations are put to good use, but Scott doesn't feel the need to overpopulate it with stylised filming techniques. It's crisp, but lacking the flair and frenetic mood of recent ventures. An American ex-fighter pilot visiting an old wealthy prominent friend in Mexico begins to have an affair with his friend's wife who finds out and takes revenge on them both. The pilot is left for dead, but he survives seeking revenge against the jealous husband / friend and reunion with his lover. Strong performances by the trio; Costner, Stone and Quinn give their characters are larger than life feel. While the support are just as capable with Tomas Milan, Miguel Ferrer, John Leguizamo, James Gammon and Sally Kirkland. While quite talky and drawn out, it's rather poetic in a classic love story sense, but willing to get seedy and tragic in its torturous outcome."Perfect for cutting the balls off your enemy."
